Finite Difference and Finite Element Methods
1999Applications of the finite difference and finite element techniques to vibroacoustic problems are presented. The basic ideas and the mathematical descriptions are outlined for both of the methods and examples are given to demonstrate the potential of such numerical techniques.

Fundamentals of finite elements and finite differences
2012In this introductory chapter we summarize some fundamental topics of approximation theory by finite elements and finite differences. The aim is to introduce the reader to notations and conventions used in the book and to gather in an organic way some basic results that are scattered in the vast literature concerning finite elements and finite ...

Finite difference and finite element methods
Computer Physics Communications, 1976Abstract The relationships between and relative advantages of finite difference and finite element methods are discussed. The less familiar finite element methods are described first for equilibrium problems: it is shown how quadratic elements on right triangles lead to natural generalisations of the powerful, fourth order accurate nine-point ...

In this chapter we introduce the calculus of finite differences, with applications in difference equations, interpolation and extrapolation and solutions to simple difference equations. Finite difference integration methods are discussed. More complex finite difference equations are then solved by operator techniques.

Finite Differences and Difference Equations
1979In Applied Mathematics we frequently encounter functions, relationships or equations that somehow depend upon one or more integer variables. There is a body of Mathematics, termed the Calculus of Finite Differences, that frequently proves useful in treating such situations.

This chapter presents numerical approaches based on finite difference (FD) techniques for dynamic simulation of single-link flexible manipulator systems. A finite-dimensional simulation of the flexible manipulator system is developed using an FD discretisation of the dynamic equation of motion of the manipulator.

Finite difference inequalities
1981The author obtains five theorems for finite difference inequalities of the generalized Gronwall type which extend the range of applications of those known discrete inequalities proved by \textit{B. G. Pachpatte} [Publ. Elektroteh. Fak., Univ. Beogr., Ser. Mat. Fiz. 577-598, 65-73 (1977; Zbl 0375.65050)].

With the aid of electronic computers we can easily calculate the behaviour of oscillating water in even the most complex surge tank systems by using finite difference methods. Consequently these methods are of great importance.
