Parametric Finite Element Simulations of Different Configurations of Partial-Strength Exposed Column Base Plate Connections

open access: yesBuildings
The present study investigates the influence of the configurations of anchor bolts and stiffeners on the monotonic response under moment conditions in the major axis and compression force of partial-strength exposed column base plate connections in order

Practical numerical simulation of the effect of TBM process pressures on soil displacements through 3D shift iteration

open access: yesUnderground Space, 2018
A 3D-finite element model is illustrated that allows for the iterative simulation of the shield drive with its face and grouting pressures by shifting the determined stresses and displacements after each calculation step.

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

Experimental and Finite Element Analyses of Adjustable Foundation Bolts in Transmission Towers

open access: yesBuildings
Uneven settlement of transmission tower foundations can result in catastrophic events, such as tower collapse and line failures, disrupting power transmission operations.

Finite element analysis of fatigue damage of composite laminated structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Composite materials are increasingly believed to be the materials of the future with potential for application in high perfon-nance structures. One of the reasons for that is the indication that composite materials have a rather good rating with regard

Elastic-plastic finite element analyses of short cracks

open access: yes, 1982
Stress and strain distributions and crack opening displacement characteristics of short cracks have been studied in single edge notch bend and centre cracked panel specimens using elastic–plastic finite element analyses incorporating both a non ...

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Analysis of Double Skin Composite Slabs

open access: yesJournal of Engineering, 2018
This paper deals with finite element modeling of the ultimate load behavior of double skin composite (DSC) slabs. In a DSC slab, shear connectors in the form of nut bolt technique studs are used to transfer shear between the outer skin made of steel ...

Conservative Discretization of the Source Term in Finite Element Analyses (In the Case of Tetrahedral Elements)

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series B, 2012
The conventional Galerkin finite element solution is mesh dependent, and its discretization for Poisson's equation can not satisfy the conservation law at a nodal level when unstructured linear meshes are used. This research tries to solve these problems by introducing a new concept of the virtual nodal domain(Vnd) for a linear hexahedral element, and ...
