A Study of Space-Time Discretizations for the Dirac Equation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
We study several numerical discretization techniques for the one-space plus one-time dimensional Dirac equation, including finite difference and space-time finite element methods. Two finite difference schemes and several space-time finite elements function spaces are analyzed with respect to known analytic solutions.

Uncertainty finite element dynamic analysis

open access: yesApplied Mathematical Modelling, 1979
Abstract An inference-dynamic model is developed based on a model dynamic analysis using a moving boundary condition. The uncertainty of the physical parameters is implemented in the model using an inference scheme coupled with a perturbation technique. Finally, the first two statistical moments of the displacements and the stress field are estimated

An Examination of Aerosol Jet‐Printed Surface Roughness and its Impact on the Performance of High‐Frequency Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores aerosol jet‐printed (AJP) surface roughness, its effects on the performance of microwave electronics, and its process contributors. First, an electromagnetic model is vetted for AJP's unique roughness signature. Simulations are built which show process‐induced roughness is as significant as conductor resistivity in driving microwave

Quadratic Mixed finite element approximations of the Monge-Ampere equation in 2D [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
We give error estimates for a mixed finite element approximation of the two-dimensional elliptic Monge-Ampere equation with the unknowns approximated by Lagrange finite elements of degree two. The variables in the formulation are the scalar variable and the Hessian matrix.

Finite element analysis of helicopter structures [PDF]

open access: yes
Application of the finite element analysis is now being expanded to three dimensional analysis of mechanical components. Examples are presented for airframe, mechanical components, and composite structure calculations.

Finite Element Analysis of Membrane Structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper summarizes the development for a large displacement formulation of a membrance composed of three-node triangular elements. A formulation in terms of the deformation gradient is first constructed in terms of nodal variables. In particular, the use of the right Cauchy-Green deformation tensor is shown to lead to a particulary simple ...

Laser Additive Manufacturing of Oxide‐Dispersion‐Strengthened Steels: A Simulation‐Based Comparison Between Powder Bed Fusion and Direct Energy Deposition

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling the size and distribution of dispersoids is essential for optimizing the performance of oxide‐dispersion‐strengthened steels. This study focuses on nanoparticle dispersion and agglomeration during laser additive manufacturing of Fe20Cr alloy reinforced with ZrO 2 nanoparticles. Utilizing multiphysics phase‐field simulations and nanoparticle

Simple finite element schemes for the solution of the curl-div system [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
New variational formulations are devised for the curl--div system, and the corresponding finite element approximations are shown to converge. Curl--free and divergence--free finite elements are employed for discretizing the problem.
