Bayesian Finite Element Model Updating

2019
In this chapter, the implementation of the reduced-order models within Bayesian finite element model updating is explored. The Bayesian framework for model parameter estimation, model selection, and robust predictions of output quantities of interest is first presented. Bayesian asymptotic approximations and sampling algorithms are then outlined.

Load Updating for Nonlinear Finite Element Models

45th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics & Materials Conference, 2004
A measurement-based load updating method for finite element models subjected to static loads was studied using a four-noded curved beam element for large displacements/rotations and a gradient-based variable metric optimizer. Finite element analysis was used to numerically calculate the geometrically linear and nonlinear responses and their ...

Finite element model updating using variable separation

European Journal of Mechanics - A/Solids, 2007
Abstract In the field of structural dynamics, reliable finite element response predictions are becoming increasingly important to industry and there is a genuine interest to improve these in the light of measured frequency response functions. Unlike modal-based model updating formulations, response-based methods have been applied only with limited ...

Updating finite element models using static deformations

Computers & Structures, 1992
Abstract In order to achieve a better correlation between the measured static behaviour of a real structure and the behaviour predicted using a analytical model, a method for updating finite element models using static deformations has been developed. The method is based on the analysis of the sensitivity of the static deformation with respect to the

FINITE ELEMENT MODEL UPDATING USING ANTIRESONANT FREQUENCIES

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2002
Abstract This paper uses antiresonant frequencies in the finite element model updating of an experimental 6-m aluminum truss and analyzes the physical correctness of the updated model by using it to detect damage. Rigid elements are used to simplify the modelling of welded joints, and their dimensions are used as parameters in an iterative update ...

Strain Measurements Based Finite Element Model Updating

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
Analytical models of the actual structure often differ greatly from their as-built counterparts. Model updating techniques improve the predictions of the behavior of the actual structure by identifying and correcting the uncertain parameters of the analytical model.

Finite Element Model Updating Accounting for Modeling Uncertainty

A novel approach to deal with modeling uncertainty when updating mechanics-based finite element (FE) models is presented. In this method, a dual adaptive filtering approach is adopted, where the Unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is used to estimate the unknown parameters of the nonlinear FE model and a linear Kalman filter (KF) is employed to estimate the ...

Link relation updating of finite element model

International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics
“ Tie” constraint is commonly used to establish the link relation of structural finite element model (FEM) in engineering. In this paper, the constrained area is taken as the updated object, and modal test data is used to update the structural FEM.

Generic element matrices suitable for finite element model updating

Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, 1995
Abstract Updating procedures are concerned with the construction of mass, stiffness and (possibly) damping matrices, near to some base matrices, which yield some response data close to some experimental values. One of the fundamental questions in updating relates to the criteria for allowable mass and stiffness matrices.

REGULARISATION METHODS FOR FINITE ELEMENT MODEL UPDATING

Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, 1998
Abstract This paper addresses the problem of selecting a side constraint and determining the regularisation parameter in model updating. The weight to be attached to the constraint is determined by the regularisation parameter. Methods based on singular value decomposition, cross-validation, and L-curves are considered, and results obtained by ...
