The psychiatric fix

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract This article draws on four years of ethnographic fieldwork in Los Angeles’ (LA) jail mental health facility to describe the interrelated crises of rising numbers of people declared incompetent to stand trial and the recurrent failure of managing madness in jail.

Dental Arch Expansion With In‐House Clear Aligners: An Exploratory Prospective Clinical Study on Torque, Vertical Control and Attachment Configuration

open access: yesOrthodontics &Craniofacial Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the short‐term efficacy of transverse dental arch expansion with in‐house aligners (IHA) by comparing planned and achieved buccolingual movements, and secondarily to explore torque expression, vertical control and the influence of attachment design/position using a contralateral within‐subject approach.

Pre‐TIPS Liver and Spleen Volumetry Are Not Associated With Liver‐Related Outcomes After TIPS Placement for Refractory Ascites

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background & Aims Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) improves survival in refractory ascites. A careful patient's selection is mandatory as TIPS can lead to complications. Liver volumetry is predictive of outcomes before hepatic surgery, but data on its role before TIPS placement are scarce. We aimed to evaluate whether liver

Sarcopenia Predicts Mortality and Hepatic Encephalopathy After TIPS in Older Adults With Cirrhosis and Improves Prognostic Scores

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims The role of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) in older adults remains controversial because of limited risk‐stratification tools. We aimed to assess whether sarcopenia and myosteatosis are independently associated with post‐TIPS mortality and overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) in patients aged ≥ 70 years,

Post‐TIPS Dynamics of von Willebrand Factor for Risk Stratification After TIPS Placement

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background & Aims Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement is used to treat complications of portal hypertension. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF) dynamics following TIPS placement.

A Constellation of Fluorescent Biosensors to Illuminate the Galaxy of Protein Kinases

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 11, 15 June 2026.
Protein kinases (PKs) are enzymes that catalyze phosphorylation of protein substrates involved in a wide variety of biological signalling pathways. This review describes the different families and mechanisms of action and regulation of protein kinases, together with the different classes of fluorescent biosensors that have been engineered and ...

An Edible H2O2 Biosensor for Gastrointestinal Metabolites and Peroxidase Enzyme Quantification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 15, Issue 21, 5 June 2026.
We present an edible biosensor for gastric fluid analysis that integrates a caffeic acid–horseradish peroxidase redox system into an edible electrolyte‐gated transistor. The device enables rapid, low‐volume detection of H2O2 and, with minimal modification, metabolites and enzyme activity in simulated gastrointestinal conditions.

The Effect of Social Associations on Mammography Screening Disparities in Rural Communities: A County‐Level Secondary Analysis

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Mammography screening rates in rural counties are lower compared to urban counties. We hypothesized that social associations may help ameliorate this rural–urban disparity. Thus, the purpose of this ecological study was to explore the relationships among rurality, social associations, and mammography screening.

Successful in vitro propagation of feline coronavirus from clinically diagnosed feline infectious peritonitis cases using Vero cells: A potential model for future research

open access: yesVeterinary Record Open, Volume 13, Issue 1, June 2026.
Abstract Background Feline coronavirus (FCoV) causes inapparent to progressive fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) in domestic and wild cats, which affects multiple‐organ systems. Methods We investigated three clinically sick cats using different laboratory and molecular tests to diagnose and confirm FCoV and propagate the virus in Vero cell ...

Clearing the Air: How Fine Particulate Matter Regulations Reshape Farmland Values in U.S. Corn and Soybean Regions

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Economics, Volume 77, Issue 2, Page 322-355, June 2026.
ABSTRACT We investigate the impact of air quality regulations targeting fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on farmland values in corn and soybean producing counties in the United States over the period 1997–2022. Using self‐reported farmland value data from the Agricultural Census and county‐level pollution classifications provided by the Environmental ...
