Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Vital rates and their multidecadal trends in the fir-beech old-growth forest of Badínsky prales

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2023
The study aimed to quantify annual mortality and recruitment rates on permanent research plots in the Badínsky prales old-growth forest. The data measured in four stands originate from six censuses, which together cover a 48-year period.

The importance of Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in comparison to spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) for arboreal Heteroptera communities in Bavarian forests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Heteropteran communities in the canopies of Silver fir (Abies alba) and spruce (Picea abies) were studied at three lowland and three mountainous sites throughout Bavaria using flight-interception traps.

Advancing Dry Electroencephalography With Scalable, Soft, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation‐Compatible Ti3C2Tx MXene Electrodes for Research and Clinical‐Grade Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Dry soft Ti3C2Tx MXene electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes provide low impedance (2.1 ± 1.8 kΩ at 10 Hz), long‐term stability, and enable safe simultaneous EEG and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Across scalp sites, hair types, and recording paradigms, including steady state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP), clinical EEG, and mobile EEG ...

IR detection module with integrated real-time FIR filter implemented in FPGA [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electronics and Telecommunications
Infrared detectors are usually characterized by 1/f noise when operating with biasing. This type of noise significantly reduces detection capabilities for low-level and slow signals.

Reflectivity measurements on hot reactive liquids using an FIR laser [PDF]

open access: yes, 1980
The experimental procedures and precautions required to measure liquid-alloy reflectivities with a cw far infrared (FIR) laser are described. The output of a carefully stabilized optically pumped FIR laser was channeled to a melted sample contained in a

Enabling the study of gene function in gymnosperms: Virus‐induced gene silencing in Ephedra tweedieana

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise As the sister clade to angiosperms, extant gymnosperms are crucial for reconstructing ancestral gene regulatory networks in seed plants. This highlights the need for model systems representing each of their distinct lineages. However, tools to quickly and effectively investigate gene function in gymnosperms are still limited due to the

Creation of a Pseudotsuga menziesii nucellus cell suspension culture system to produce proteins involved in reproduction

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Cell suspension cultures of Douglas‐fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) nucellus were created to overcome phenological limitations to the in situ study of bioactive proteins within and secreted by nucellar cells. Methods Proteins isolated from the cell suspension culture medium were analyzed using mass spectrometry, as were Douglas‐fir post ...
