An analysis of the FIR/RADIO Continuum Correlation in the Small Magellanic Cloud

open access: yes, 2012
The local correlation between far-infrared (FIR) emission and radio-continuum (RC) emission for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is investigated over scales from 3 kpc to 0.01 kpc. Here, we report good FIR/RC correlation down to ~15 pc.

FIR/submm spectroscopy with Herschel: first results from the VNGS and H-ATLAS surveys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The FIR/submm window is one of the least-studied regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, yet this wavelength range is absolutely crucial for understanding the physical processes and properties of the ISM in galaxies.

A pipeline crisis or a sustainability crisis? Local and national succession planning for headteachers in England

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Recruiting and retaining school leaders is a challenge in many systems worldwide. Previous research has identified three distinct ways in which succession planning can be conceptualised and approached: a ‘pipeline’ approach seeks to match supply and demand for the posts that need filling; a ‘pool’ strategy involves proactively identifying and ...

A review of the historic and present ecological role of aquatic and shoreline wood, from forest to deep sea

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ecology of forests, their losses, and terrestrial wood decomposition dynamics have been intensively studied and reviewed. In the aquatic realm, reviews have concentrated on large wood (LW) in rivers and the transition from freshwater to marine environments in the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, a comprehensive global synthesis

UV and FIR selected star-forming galaxies at z=0: differences and overlaps

open access: yes, 2006
We study two samples of local galaxies, one is UV (GALEX) selected and the other FIR (IRAS) selected, to address the question whether UV and FIR surveys see the two sides ('bright' and 'dark') of the star formation of the same population of galaxies or ...

Spatial metrics in fire ecology: seeking consistency amidst complexity

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Technological advances, including remote sensing, have led to a proliferation of metrics used in ecological studies to examine spatial patterns of fire regimes and their ecological effects. Researchers can use many different metrics to analyse spatial variation in both fire events and resulting fire regimes, including fire size, shape ...

Regeneration of subalpine conifer species is inhibited by bark-stripping deer in a Betula forest

open access: yesArctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research
Climate change is expected to alter biotic interactions governing tree species ranges. Identifying the limiting demographic processes controlling tree distribution is key to projecting future range shifts.

Molecular Gas in Lensed z >2 Quasar Host Galaxies and the Star Formation Law for Galaxies with Luminous Active Galactic Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We report the detection of luminous CO(J = 2→1), CO(J = 3→2), and CO(J = 4→3) emission in the strongly lensed high-redshift quasars B1938+666 (z = 2.059), HE 0230-2130 (z = 2.166), HE 1104-1805 (z = 2.322), and B1359+154 (z = 3.240), using the Combined ...
