The Morals of Model-Making [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
I address questions about values in model-making in engineering, specifically: Might the role of values be attributable solely to interests involved in specifying and using the model? Selected examples illustrate the surprisingly wide variety of things

Insights for conservation from the Ecological Knowledge Games project

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Environmental conservation research requires robust methods for collecting large‐scale behavioral data and engaging diverse stakeholders in decision‐making processes. We (Y.P., A.B.D., and N.B.) created EcoKnowGames (Ecological Knowledge Games), a transdisciplinary project that develops knowledge games for conservation science and data ...

Scientists’ warning on the global destruction of rock outcrop ecosystems

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Rock outcrops are geological formations that harbor a highly specialized biota adapted to harsh environmental conditions that differ from their surrounding landscapes. They are globally distributed, especially in old, highly weathered landscapes, and can function as habitat islands containing high levels of endemism and distinct evolutionary ...

How a Traveling Exhibition on Wasps Altered Public Perceptions

open access: yesCurator: The Museum Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Media portrays a caricature of the “evil” wasp (a flying insect), perpetuating fears developed at a young age or from individual negative experiences. Because wasps are critically important to nature and our agriculture, it is important to provide some form of education to lessen this fear.

Navigating Inter‐Municipal Collaboration Challenges: 'In‐Tensions' in Shared Service Center and Joint Venture Arrangements

open access: yesFinancial Accountability &Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Municipal collaborations such as shared service centers and joint ventures are widely promoted as ways to strengthen local service capacity. Yet they often develop in uneven and sometimes unstable ways. This paper examines why arrangements built on similar institutional promises take such different trajectories in practice.

Sheep and cattle grazing regimes differentially affect ground beetle and ant communities in Mediterranean cork oak woodlands

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Sheep and cattle grazing significantly shape ant and ground beetle species composition in Mediterranean cork oak woodlands, promoting higher diversity by increasing habitat heterogeneity. Ground beetles and ants reflect changes in grazing regimes, with sheep‐grazed areas showing the highest diversity, highlighting their utility in ecosystem monitoring.

New medicine for soil restoration: biological soil crust capsules facilitate native plant and soil microbe establishment

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Restoration in drylands is challenging because of harsh climates, requiring creative methods and organisms like biocrusts for restoration of degraded lands. Biocrusts are thin, coherent soil surface layers prevalent in drylands, engineered, and inhabited by communities of organisms including mosses, lichens, and cyanobacteria ...

Potential health benefits of cold‐water immersion: the central role of PGC‐1α

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Cold‐water immersion (CWI) elicits autonomic, somato‐motoric (shivering thermogenesis), endocrine and metabolic, sensory transduction, and local biophysical effects that may converge on the transcriptional co‐activator PGC‐1α (centre).

Ant-fungal diversity in fire ants

open access: yes, 2020
This research is focused on the ant-fungal diversity found in Invasive Fire Ants. The project looked at the difference in both diversity and abundance of fungal morphospecies found within fire ants, the colony soil, and the control ...
