Integrating Real-Time Meteorological Conditions into a Novel Fire Spread Model for Grasslands

open access: yesFire
Accurate comprehension of grassland fires is imperative for maintaining ecological stability. In this study, we propose a novel fire model that incorporates real-time meteorological conditions.

Radionuclide behavior in coal-fired plants

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 1980
The behavior of natural radionuclides in the coal-burning process was studied. Distribution of radionuclides near a coal-fired power plant and doses of power plant emissions of radionuclides to humans were analyzed. Coal-fired power plants are a major source of atmospheric radionuclides/ any attempts to increase coal use should be made after ...

Coordinated Multi‐Component Gradient Engineering of Catalyst Layers for Advanced Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a continuous linear gradient catalyst layer design, a general strategy for improving membrane electrode assemblies across electrochemical devices. Fabricated via a dual‐nozzle spray coating method, the architecture controls the Pt/carbon ratio, ionomer content and ionomer type across the catalyst layer, enhancing proton conduction ...

Interactions Between a High-Intensity Wildfire and an Atmospheric Hydraulic Jump in the Case of the 2023 Lahaina Fire

open access: yesAtmosphere
On 8 August 2023, a grass fire that started in the city of Lahaina, Hawai’i, grew into the deadliest wildfire in the United States since 1918. This wildfire offers a unique opportunity to explore the impact of high heat output on an atmospheric hydraulic

TESTING FOR DIFFERENTIAL EFFECTS OF FOREST FIRES ON HIKING AND MOUNTAIN BIKING DEMAND AND BENEFITS [PDF]

open access: yes
Surveys of visitors to National Forests in Colorado were conducted to determine whether different fire ages and presence of crown fires have different effects on hiking and mountain biking recreation visits and benefits. Actual and intended behavior data

Universal Neuromorphic Element: NbOx Memristor with Co‐Existing Volatile, Non‐Volatile, and Threshold Switching

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A W/NbOx/Pt memristor demonstrates the coexistence of volatile, non‐volatile, and threshold switching characteristics. Volatile switching serves as a reservoir computing layer, providing dynamic short‐term processing. Non‐volatile switching, stabilized through ISPVA, improves reliable long‐term readout. Threshold switching operates as a leaky integrate

A Van der Waals Optoelectronic Synapse with Tunable Positive and Negative Post‐Synaptic Current for Highly Accurate Spiking Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A van der Waals optoelectronic synaptic device based on a ReS2/WSe2 heterostructure and oxygen‐treated h‐BN is presented, which enables both positive and negative PSCs through photocarrier polarity reversal. Bidirectional plasticity arises from gate‐tunable band bending and charge trapping‐induced quasi‐doping.

An uncommon case of random fire-setting behavior associated with Todd paralysis: A case report

open access: yesBMC Psychiatry, 2012
Background The association between fire-setting behavior and psychiatric or medical disorders remains poorly understood. Although a link between fire-setting behavior and various organic brain disorders has been established, associations between fire ...
