Mineral metabolism disturbances in kidney donors: smoke, no fire (yet) [PDF]

open access: yesKidney International, 2016
Kasiske and colleagues studied mineral and bone metabolism after unilateral donor nephrectomy. Similar as to what is observed early in the course of chronic kidney disease, fibroblast growth factor 23 and parathyroid hormone concentrations were shown to be increased following kidney donation.

Chronobiology of Cancer: How Aging Fuels Oncogenesis at the Molecular Level

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates the key biological pathways linking aging with cancer development and progression. In the upper left, cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, toxins, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) causes DNA damage and genomic instability, whereas age‐related decline in repair mechanisms, such as ATM/ATR, BER, and NER ...

Landscape-Scale Effects of Fire, Cats, and Feral Livestock on Threatened Savanna Mammals: Unburnt Habitat Matters More Than Pyrodiversity

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Northern Australia has undergone significant declines among threatened small and medium-sized mammals in recent decades. Conceptual models postulate that predation by feral cats is the primary driver, with changed disturbance regimes from fire and feral ...

Natural Frequencies of Levodopa‐Induced Dyskinesia in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Abnormal involuntary movements, known as dyskinesias, are common complications of levodopa treatment in patients with Parkinson's disease and can significantly impair quality of life. The underlying pathophysiology remains unclear, and current therapeutic options are limited.

Fire severity filters regeneration traits to shape community assembly in Alaska's boreal forest.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Disturbance can both initiate and shape patterns of secondary succession by affecting processes of community assembly. Thus, understanding assembly rules is a key element of predicting ecological responses to changing disturbance regimes. We measured the

Germination Ecology and Seed Dispersal of a Critically Endangered Plant: A Case Study of Pomaderris vacciniifolia (Round-Leaf Pomaderris). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Change in ecosystem disturbance regimes from human land-use poses a worldwide problem for management of rare species. Two important types of disturbance influencing the persistence of species in Australian ecosystems are habitat fragmentation and fire ...

On a Data-Driven Approach for Detecting Disturbance in the Brazilian Savannas Using Time Series of Vegetation Indices

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
Remote sensing of disturbance in the savannas from Brazil is challenging, especially due to confounding effects of the vegetation phenology and natural soil exposure on the detection of clearing and fire events.

Extending Service Beyond Active Duty: Generalizability of Rheumatoid Arthritis Research Conducted Among U.S. Veterans

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Biomedical research involving United States Veterans continues to advance healthcare beyond the Veterans Health Administration. This is particularly true in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), where Veteran‐centric research has uncovered novel insights into pathogenesis, risk factors, and disease manifestations, informing clinical care and research across both ...

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Biotic responses to fire disturbance in Canada

open access: yesEnvironmental Reviews
Wildfires are ecological disturbances that drive rapid and often long-lasting changes to biological communities in forest ecosystems. This review synthesizes post-fire responses across microbial (fungi and bacteria), insect and other invertebrate, landbird, forest-dwelling mammal, and aquatic communities, with an emphasis on Canadian forest ecosystems.
