The reformation of Hell? Protestant and Catholic infernalisms in England, c. 1560–1640 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Despite a recent expansion of interest in the social history of death, there has been little scholarly examination of the impact of the Protestant Reformation on perceptions of and discourses about hell.

Ungulate herbivores as drivers of aspen recruitment and understory composition throughout arid montane landscapes

open access: yesEcosphere, 2022
Herbivory by wild and domestic ungulates can influence tree recruitment and understory forest communities throughout the world. Herbivore‐driven declines in tree recruitment have been observed for quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), a foundation species

Evolving fire management strategies and their impact on the occurrence and spatial extent of unplanned wildfires in a large African savanna park

open access: yesTerritorium: Revista Portuguesa de riscos, prevenção e segurança, 2018
Savannas cover approximately 20 % of the global land surface. In African savannas, fire is an important agent for controlling these ecosystems. Kruger National Park (KNP) is a large African savanna park which has implemented a variety of fire management ...

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.

Have Historical Land Use/Land Cover Changes Triggered a Fire Regime Shift in Central Spain?

open access: yesFire, 2019
Fire is one of the main disturbance factors shaping the landscape, and landscape is a key driver of fire behavior. Considering the role played by land use and land cover (LULC) changes as the main driver of landscape dynamics, the aim of this study was ...

Lessons Learned From a Delayed‐Start Trial of Modafinil for Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) is debilitating and has limited treatments. Modafinil modulates beta/gamma band activity in the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), like PPN deep brain stimulation. We therefore tested the hypothesis that Modafinil would improve FOG in PwPD.

The Effect of Fire on Multiple Tree Species in the Eastern Deciduous Forest

open access: yesFire
Fire is a disturbance that serves to maintain the diverse mosaic of vegetation in the Eastern Deciduous Forest. However, our ability to reconstruct fire occurrence from hardwood tree scars still lags far behind our expertise in reconstructing fire ...

Influences of climate fluctuations on northeastern North America’s burned areas largely outweigh those of European settlement since AD 1850

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2021
There is a pressing need for a better understanding of changing forest fire regimes worldwide, especially to separate the relative effects of potential drivers that control burned areas.

Exploring Ecoacoustic Trajectories in a Giant Sequoia Forest After Wildfire

open access: yesFrontiers in Remote Sensing, 2022
Forest management strategies that create spatially diverse fire-caused disturbance outcomes, consistent with historic fire regimes, are a desired condition for fire adapted western United States forests.

Fire as an evolutionary pressure shaping plant traits [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
6 páginas, 2 figuras, 1 cuadro.Traits, such as resprouting, serotiny and germination by heat and smoke, are adaptive in fire-prone environments. However, plants are not adapted to fire per se but to fire regimes.
