Driver analysis of subarctic wildfire severity over a 35-year period

open access: yesBig Earth Data
Large subarctic wildfires are causing environmental damage, releasing stored carbon, and forcing residents to relocate. Subarctic ecosystems are experiencing earlier, longer, and more intense wildfire seasons due in part to factors such as warmer winters

The analysis of charcoal in peat and organic sediments [PDF]

open access: yesMires and Peat, 2011
The abundance of charcoal in sediments has been interpreted as a ‘fire history’ at about 1,000 sites across the globe. This research effort reflects the importance of fire in many ecosystems, and the diversity of processes that can be affected by fire in

Unveiling the Role of Curvature in Carbon for Improved Energy Release of Ammonium Perchlorate

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
High‐curvature carbon materials identified via machine learning and simulation can enhance the heat release and combustion performance of ammonium perchlorate. ABSTRACT The catalytic role of carbon curvature in the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, this study employs machine learning and

A Multisensor Multiresolution Method for Mapping Vegetation Status, Surficial Deposits, and Historical Fires Over Very Large Areas in Northern Boreal Forests of Quebec, Canada

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2015
Boreal forests have a significant impact on the Earth’s climate and on global warming. In this context, a mapping method was developed and was capable of dealing with very large areas with a lack of support datasets, which could characterize the ...

Self‐Powered Flexible Triboelectric‐Gated Ion‐Gel Transistor for Neuromorphic Tactile Sensing and Human Activity Recognition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A fully flexible ion‐gel‐gated graphene‐channel transistor driven by a triboelectric nanogenerator enables self‐powered tactile sensing and synaptic learning. Mimicking spike‐rate‐dependent plasticity, the device exhibits frequency‐selective potentiation and depression, supporting rate‐coded neuromorphic computation even under flex.

Fighting the Defensive Battle on the Jamestown Line: The Canadians in Korea, November 1951 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Barbed wire. Artillery duels. Patrolling in “no-man’s land.” Static warfare from fixed defensive positions. This description could easily fit the western front in 1916.
