Phase Transitions in a Forest-Fire Model

open access: yes, 1997
We investigate a forest-fire model with the density of empty sites as control parameter. The model exhibits three phases, separated by one first-order phase transition and one 'mixed' phase transition which shows critical behavior on only one side and ...

TMC4 localizes to multiple taste cell types in the mouse taste papillae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Transmembrane channel‐like 4 (TMC4), a voltage‐dependent chloride channel, plays a critical role in amiloride‐insensitive salty taste transduction. TMC4 is broadly expressed in all mature taste cell types, suggesting a possible involvement of multiple cell types in this pathway.

Simulations of the Waroona fire using the coupled atmosphere–fire model ACCESS-Fire [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Southern Hemisphere Earth Systems Science, 2022
The Waroona fire burned 69000ha south of Perth in January 2016. There were two fatalities and 170 homes were lost. Two evening ember storms were reported and pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) cloud developed on consecutive days.

Modeling long-term fire impact on ecosystem characteristics and surface energy using a process-based vegetation–fire model SSiB4/TRIFFID-Fire v1.0 [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development, 2020
Fire is one of the primary disturbances to the distribution and ecological properties of the world's major biomes and can influence the surface fluxes and climate through vegetation–climate interactions.

Computer vision techniques for forest fire perception [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper presents computer vision techniques for forest fire perception involving measurement of forest fire properties (fire front, flame height, flame inclination angle, fire base width) required for the implementation of advanced forest fire ...

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

Visual Recovery Reflects Cortical MeCP2 Sensitivity in Rett Syndrome

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Rett syndrome (RTT) is a devastating neurodevelopmental disorder with developmental regression affecting motor, sensory, and cognitive functions. Sensory disruptions contribute to the complex behavioral and cognitive difficulties and represent an important target for therapeutic interventions.

Effect of column base strength on steel portal frames in fire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In the UK, the design of steel portal frame buildings in fire is based on the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) design method, in which fire protection needs only be provided to the columns, provided that the column bases are designed to resist an ...

Refractory Status Epilepticus Treated With Bilateral Pulvinar Deep Brain Stimulation—A Case Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT New‐onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) arises without an identifiable cause or prior epilepsy history, with a 16%–27% mortality rate and significant long‐term neurological sequelae. Neuromodulation such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the anterior and centromedian thalamic nuclei has shown promise when the traditional ...

Explorative study into a simplified numerical evaluation of the bending capacity of rebar reinforced steel fibre reinforced concrete beams during fire exposure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A simplified 2D numerical model for evaluating the bending capacity of rebar reinforced steel fibre reinforced concrete (R/SFRC) beams during fire is presented.
