Investigating the Low‐Temperature Phase Stability of the Binary Ta–W System

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Atomistic simulations show that the binary Ta–W system forms ordered intermetallic phases, B2‐TaW and D03‐TaW3, as 0 K ground states. Configurational entropy, however, lowers the free energy of the disordered bcc solid solution, which becomes the stable phase above about 400 K.

Climate-induced fire regimes in the Russian biodiversity hotspots

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2018
Recent fire management policy in Russia assumes the complete exclusion of fires from the statutory reserves. We analyzed what the natural, climate-induced fire regimes for the historical years 1901–1998 in Russia, in the Russian biodiversity hotspots and

Projecting Future Fire Regimes in a Semiarid Watershed of the Inland Northwestern United States: Interactions Among Climate Change, Vegetation Productivity, and Fuel Dynamics

open access: yesEarth's Future, 2022
Fire regimes are influenced by both exogenous drivers (e.g., increases in atmospheric CO2 and climate change) and endogenous drivers (e.g., vegetation and soil/litter moisture), which constrain fuel loads and fuel aridity.

A Three-Regime Theorem for Flow-Firing

open access: yesThe Electronic Journal of Combinatorics
Graphical chip-firing is a discrete dynamical system where chips are placed on the vertices of a graph and exchanged via simple firing moves. Recent work has sought to generalize chip-firing on graphs to higher dimensions, wherein graphs are replaced by cellular complexes and chip firing becomes flow-rerouting along the faces of the complex. Given such

Bio‐Inspired Artificial Ionic Mechanoreceptor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A skin‐inspired artificial mechanoreceptor based on ionic interactions is presented for biomimetic tactile sensing. Pressure‐driven ionic redistribution within microfluidic channels generates a self‐powered electrical signal without external bias. The generated waveform exhibits mechanoreceptor‐like temporal features, including overshoot and undershoot,

An Epigenetic Fate Converter Based on Nuclei‐Targeting Lipid Nanoparticles Drives Neuronal Programming of Stem Cells for Spinal Cord Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of LNP‐MPG nuclei‐targeting delivery of HMW‐FGF2 promoting histone acetylation to regulate the fate of DPSCs and treat spinal cord injury. LNPs components include pHMW‐FGF2 plasmid, DSPC, Dlin‐MC3‐DMA, cholesterol, and PEG2000, and are modified with MPG to form HMW‐FGF2@LNP‐MPG (HLM). HLM nuclei‐targets DPSCs to deliver HMW‐FGF2,

Model fires, not ignitions: Capturing the human dimension of global fire regimes

open access: yesCell Reports Sustainability
Fire regimes are intrinsically shaped by humans, but current global fire models do not reflect the diverse objectives humans have for managing fire. With new data sources and collaboration across disciplines, an improved understanding of human influences

Architecture‐Driven Functional Coupling in Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Vertically aligned nanocomposites define a growth‐engineered architecture in which vertical interfaces, strain fields, defect pathways, and phase connectivity are created simultaneously. This review shows how these architectural features couple ferroic, optical, ionic, electrochemical, and device responses, establishing design rules and open challenges
