Grassland Fire Disaster Risk Forecast in Xinlinguole Based on Support Vector Machine

open access: yes, 2010
This study presents a new methodology for risk forecast and assessment of grassland fire disaster based on support vector machine (SVM). Take Xinlinguole as an example, the hazard of grassland fire, the exposure of the region, the vulnerability and ...

“It Is Much Safer to Be Sparse than Connected”: Safe Control of Robotic Swarm Density Dynamics with PDE Optimization with State Constraints

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper proposes a novel control framework to ensure safety of a robotic swarm. A feedback optimization controller is capable of driving the swarm toward a target density while keeping risk‐zone exposure below a safety threshold. Theory and experiments show how safety is more effectively achieved for sparsely connected swarms.

Ag/Ag2S Nanoparticle‐Based In‐Materio Lightweight Cryptographic System for IoT Edge Security

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work presents a nanomaterial‐based in materio encryption method that directly transforms analog signals through nonlinear Ag/Ag2S nanoparticle networks. By exploiting the inherently nonuniform characteristics that arise from random arrangement of nanoparticles as a unique security key, the approach produces highly complex encrypted waveforms ...

Time‐Delayed Spiking Reservoir Computing Enables Efficient Time Series Prediction

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study proposes time‐delayed spiking reservoir computing (TDSRC) for efficient time series prediction. By concatenating time‐lagged states, TDSRC constructs an expanded readout feature vector without altering internal reservoir dynamics. This approach enables highly accurate forecasting with significantly fewer neurons, providing a resource ...

How cold is too cold? A theoretical analysis of the optimal trigger for index insurance for frost damage to crops

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Crop insurance is undoubtedly an extremely valuable element in protecting agricultural businesses, but in many cases standard indemnity‐based products have had very low uptake due to high transaction costs elevating premiums to unaffordable levels.

Pre-European fire regimes in Australian ecosystems

open access: yes, 2008
We use multiple lines of evidence, including palaeo-environmental, ecological, historical, anthropological and archaeological, to investigate pre-European fire regimes in Australia, with particular focus on the extent to which the use of fire by ...

Redistributive land reforms, agricultural productivity, and structural change: New cross‐national evidence

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Large‐scale land reforms constitute a substantial redistribution of wealth and reallocation of agricultural land, which is a major form of asset and production input in developing countries. While land redistribution (from the rich to the poor) remains a highly controversial issue, extensive evidence on its effect is limited.
