Decorrelation and efficient coding by retinal ganglion cells [PDF]
An influential theory of visual processing asserts that retinal center-surround receptive fields remove spatial correlations in the visual world, producing ganglion cell spike trains that are less redundant than the corresponding image pixels. For bright,

Foraging plasticity favours adaptation to new habitats in fire salamanders
Predators often show strong plasticity of optimal foraging strategies. A major difference in foraging strategies occurs between sit-and-wait and active predators. Models predict that the efficiency of these strategies is affected by environmental conditions, active predators being favoured when prey are scarce and their detection difficult.

The Projective Field of a Retinal Amacrine Cell [PDF]
In sensory systems, neurons are generally characterized by their receptive field, namely the sensitivity to activity patterns at the input of the circuit. To assess the role of the neuron in the system, one must also know its projective field, namely the

Cartilage on the Move: Cartilage Lineage Tracing During Tadpole Metamorphosis
The reorganization of cranial cartilages during tadpole metamorphosis is a set of complex processes. The fates of larval cartilage-forming cells (chondrocytes) and sources of adult chondrocytes are largely unknown.

Effects of prescribed fire on Cope’s Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis) across habitat scales and life stages [PDF]
Fire may alter both aquatic and terrestrial habitat used by all amphibian life stages, yet, our knowledge of its effects on amphibians is primarily limited to adult responses. I present an integrated approach to test the response of Cope’s Gray Treefrog (

Recent worldwide declines and extinctions of amphibian populations have been attributed to chytridiomycosis, a disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd).

An information theoretic approach to the functional classification of neurons [PDF]
A population of neurons typically exhibits a broad diversity of responses to sensory inputs. The intuitive notion of functional classification is that cells can be clustered so that most of the diversity is captured in the identity of the clusters rather

Biogeography of the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra, L.) in Portugal
Several studies show that the Betic and Messinian crisis may be linked to origin of several Iberian endemic species, while the Pleistocene ice ages cycles are responsible for the fragmentation of species into subspecies and lineages divergence. The present study of the relationships between Salamandra salamandra subspecies (S. s. gallaica and S.
