Trait phenology and fire seasonality co‐drive seasonal variation in fire effects on tree crowns

New Phytologist, 2022
Summary The plume of hot gases rising above a wildfire can heat and kill the buds in tree crowns. This can reduce leaf area and rates of photosynthesis, growth, and reproduction, and may ultimately lead to mortality. These effects vary seasonally, but the mechanisms governing this seasonality are not well understood.

Evaluation of Seasonal Forecasts for the Fire Season in Interior Alaska

Weather and Forecasting, 2021
AbstractIn this study, seasonal forecasts from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2), are compared with station observations to assess their usefulness in producing accurate buildup index (BUI) forecasts for the fire season in Interior Alaska.

The 2000 Fire Season: Lightning-Caused Fires

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 2002
Abstract A large number of lightning-caused fires burned across the western United States during the summer of 2000. In a previous study, the authors determined that a simple index of low-level moisture (85-kPa dewpoint depression) and instability (85–50-kPa temperature difference) from the Spokane, Washington, upper-air soundings was very useful for ...

The 2022 fire season over Europe

2023
Over the summer of 2022, Europe experienced exceptional wildfire activity, with fires occurring more frequently and intensively, mainly in Spain, France, and Portugal. Together these countries registered more than 470 000 hectares of the total 786 000 burnt area in the European Union, accordingly to the estimates of the European Forest Fire Information

Fire Return Interval and Season of Fire Alter Bud Banks

Rangeland Ecology & Management, 2019
Abstract Despite the importance of vegetative reproduction in annual tiller replacement, little is known about the patterns and timing of tiller recruitment from the bud bank, especially regarding fire return intervals and seasons of fire. We examined aboveground plant density, temporal patterns of tiller production, and belowground bud bank dynamics
