Prescribed Fire Effects on Hummingbird Taxonomic and Functional Diversity in Pine–Oak Forests in West-Central Mexico

open access: yesBirds
Prescribed fires are a management strategy involving the controlled application of fire to achieve specific ecological objectives. In the pine–oak forests in west-central Mexico, we conducted an experimental low-severity prescribed fire to assess its ...

Fire Severity as a Determinant of the Socioeconomic Impact of Wildfires

open access: yes
AbstractFire has played a crucial role in shaping Earth's landscapes for millions of years and has been used as a cultural tool for human development for millennia. However, changing fire regimes driven by global change drivers and human influences are reshaping landscapes and leading to more severe wildfires, with significant socioeconomic and ...

Flame Suppression in Lithium‐Ion Batteries During Thermal Runaway Through Solvent Design Considering the Volatility–Flammability Relationship

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An asymmetric sulfonate solvent forms thermally stable interphases and demonstrates non‐flammability, suppressing heat accumulation for safer, high‐performance lithium‐ion batteries. ABSTRACT An asymmetric sulfonate‐based linear solvent, 2,2,2‐trifluoromethyl mesylate (FMS), is designed and used as the primary solvent in liquid electrolytes to enhance ...

Surface Neuronal‐Like Structuring of High‐Strength CFRP for Enhanced Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study elucidates the microstructural evolution at the material interface of Ni‐plated plain‐weave carbon fiber fabric following vacuum heat treatment at 500°C–900°C under different current densities, as well as the mechanism underlying the synergistic enhancement of electromagnetic shielding and ductility.

The legacy of pine plantations on fire severity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology
Abstract In Mediterranean ecosystems, afforestation efforts have created landscapes with high fuel loads and continuity that, in combination with warmer and drier conditions, may intensify fire activity. Yet, the relative contribution of afforestation to current fire

ZBTB18 Dysfunction Promotes Neuropathic Pain via CHD4‐based Epigenetic Disinhibition of CLIC1 Channels in Sensory Neurons

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, we identify a novel functional role of ZBTB18 in regulating trigeminal‐mediated neuropathic pain. Nerve injury reduces ZBTB18 in trigeminal ganglion neurons, impairing CHD4/NuRD recruitment and de‐repressing Clic1. Elevated CLIC1 enhances chloride channel activity and neuronal hyperexcitability, thereby driving pain.

Pine plantations and fire severity

open access: yes
We recently analyzed fire severity, vegetation type, and post-fire recovery in three large wildfires in Spain using remote sensing data (Sentinel-2 imagery) [1]. The studied fires were: Sierra Bermeja (9,670 ha; Málaga, 2021), the merged Sierra de la Culebra and Losacio fires (58,700 ha; Zamora, 2022), and Sierra de las Hurdes (10,863 ha; Cáceres, 2023)

Low Latency Global Carbon Budget Reveals Late 2024 Carbon Losses and Contrasting Early 2025 Land Sink Recovery Signals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Low latency carbon budget estimates for July 2024–June 2025 combine atmospheric CO2 growth rates, fossil emissions, ocean uptake, DGVM land fluxes, and OCO‐2 inversions. The budget shows that late‐2024 land carbon losses dominate the annual anomaly, while early‐2025 recovery differs between bottom‐up models and top‐down inversions, especially in ...
