Fire severity is more sensitive to low fuel moisture content on Calluna heathlands than on peat bogs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Moorland habitats dominated by the dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris provide important ecosystem services. Drought is projected to intensify throughout their range, potentially leading to increased fire severity as moisture is a key control on severity.

Cryogenic Neuromorphic Synaptic Behavior in 180 nm Silicon Transistors for Emerging Computing Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study investigates the neuromorphic plasticity behavior of 180 nm bulk complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) transistors at cryogenic temperatures. The observed hysteresis data reveal a signature of synaptic behavior in CMOS transistors at 4 K.

Static and dynamic controls on fire activity at moderate spatial and temporal scales in the Alaskan boreal forest

open access: yesEcosphere, 2016
Wildfire, a dominant disturbance in boreal forests, is highly variable in occurrence and behavior at multiple spatiotemporal scales. New data sets provide more detailed spatial and temporal observations of active fires and the post‐burn environment in ...

Dangerous calling, the life-and-death matter of safety at sea: a collection of articles from SAMUDRA Report [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Fishing is arguably the world's most dangerous vocation, reporting the highest rate of occupational fatalities among industries, made only worse by declining fish prices, overfished waters and shortened fishing seasons.

Forest fire danger extremes in Europe under climate change: variability and uncertainty [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Forests cover over a third of the total land area of Europe. In recent years, large forest fires have repeatedly affected Europe, in particular the Mediterranean countries.

Review of Memristors for In‐Memory Computing and Spiking Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Memristors uniquely enable energy‐efficient, brain‐inspired computing by acting as both memory and synaptic elements. This review highlights their physical mechanisms, integration in crossbar arrays, and role in spiking neural networks. Key challenges, including variability, relaxation, and stochastic switching, are discussed, alongside emerging ...

The heat is on: climate change, extreme heat and bushfires in WA [PDF]

open access: yes
Climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of heatwaves in Western Australia and driving up the likelihood of very high fire danger weather.

Parents' WhatsApp coping resources in the context of ongoing political conflicts: An ecological exploration

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Mobile technologies have become significant resources for crisis communication and social support in recent years. However, despite empirical evidence pointing to the centrality of these technologies for parenthood in everyday life, it is yet unknown how parents' coping resources play a role in the digital environment.
