The interaction of double burner fire whirls
Combustion and Flame, 2022Abstract A detailed description is given of double burner fire whirls that are similar in structure to the type of combined whirls seen in nature. The whirls are generated using the fixed frame method, and two burners are placed symmetrically about the center of the fixed frame.

Fire whirls in forest fires: An experimental analysis
Fire Safety Journal, 2017Abstract This work presents a study on the formation of fire whirls with vertical axis on wildfires at laboratory scale. A particularity of the study is the use of typical forest fuels instead of fossil fuels as seen in some of previous studies on this topic.

Stereo PIV measurements in fire whirls
Experiments in Fluids, 2018Fire whirls are standing vortex structures that often form in forest fires. Here, we report an experimental study of a laboratory burner fire whirl generated using the fixed-frame method, with a particular focus on the velocity field associated with the whirl.

Formation of multiple fire whirls
Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1969Multiple fire whirls were formed from a controlled propane gas line fire placed between two parallel moving screens which impart a controlled shear to the ambient air. It was found that the line fire, breaks up into approximately equally spaced fire whirls after the attainment of certain critical conditions.

Experimental studies on characteristics of fire whirl in a vertical shaft
Fire and Materials, 2019An internal fire whirl can be generated readily in a tall shaft model with appropriate gap width at one corner. Experimental study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of an IFW and the corner gap width in a 9‐m ...

Fire-whirl Movement along Line Fires – A Separated-flow Rotating-cylinder Analogy
, 2020A model is proposed for estimating how fire whirls may begin to move along line fires and the velocities at which they may propagate steadily against the direction of the prevailing wind, instead of moving downwind, as most moving fire whirls do.

Scaling considerations for fire whirls
2020This brief report, based on a presentation made at the Eighth International Symposium on Scale Modeling, held in Portland, Oregon, in September of 2017, summarizes and evaluates different methods for classifying fire whirls and their scaling laws. It is indicated that a number of relevant non-dimensional parameters are known for fire whirls, and future

CFD Study of Generation Process and Stability of a Fire Whirl in Large-Scale Fires
Volume 8: Heat Transfer and Thermal Engineering, 2019Large-scale urban and forest fires, especially earthquake-induced fires may produce huge fire whirls and cause serious damage, due to the involved tornado-like strong wind, together with radiation and swirling flame.

Experimental Study on Flame Wander of Small-scale Fire Whirl based on Video Image Analysis
2019 9th International Conference on Fire Science and Fire Protection Engineering (ICFSFPE), 2019In this work, the flame displacement data along horizontal direction in small-scale fire whirl due to flame wander was extracted by the method of video image analysis, by which the appearance probability of flame center along horizontal direction and ...

Reconstruction of fire whirls using scale models
Combustion and Flame, 1991Abstract This work was motivated from the knowledge of a historical fire whirl accident in which a fire whirl was responsible for 38,000 deaths and serious damage to the environment, all of which happened within 15 minutes. To understand the general features of fire whirls, records of example fire whirls were collected and deduced to be of three ...
