A theory for multiple fire-whirl formation
Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1973In an effort to gain a better understanding of the mechanics involved in the formation ofvortices in buoyancy driven flows, an analysis on the stability of the laminar free convection, due to a line source of heat with ambient shear, was performed by numerical solution of a viscous linear stability equation.

Internal Fire Whirls in a Vertical Shaft
Journal of Fire Sciences, 2010Internal fire whirls induced by a pool fire in a vertical shaft of height 15 m with different ventilation conditions are studied experimentally. Ventilation is provided through a rectangular gap at the side wall with varying widths. Gasoline pool fires with diameters up to 0.46 m are set up at the center of the floor. Flame height and burning duration

Model experiment of hazardous forest fire whirl
Fire Technology, 1982The fluid dynamical scaling laws of forest fires are derived by dimensional analysis and a scale model is constructed to investigate a forest fire which seriously injured several fire fighters. The result of the small-scale experiment indicate that a fire whirl could be generated in such a fire.

The fluid mechanics of fire whirls: An inviscid model
Physics of Fluids, 2000Whirling fire plumes are known to increase the danger of naturally occurring or post-disaster fires. In order for a fire whirl to exist, there must be an organized source of angular momentum to produce the large swirl velocities as air is entrained into the fire plume. These vorticity-driven fires occur over a large range of length and velocity scales,

Internal Fire Whirls Induced by Pool Fire in a Vertical Shaft
ASME/JSME 2011 8th Thermal Engineering Joint Conference, 2011Internal fire whirls induced by a pool fire in a square vertical shaft were studied by experiments and numerical simulations. The burning behaviour of two pool fires in the vertical shaft and in open air was compared. The gap width of the rig is a key factor in onsetting fire whirls.

Scale-model experiments of moving fire whirl over a line fire
Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2013Abstract A fire whirl, observed during a wildland fire in Brazil in 2010, occurred over a narrow but long line fire and moved along the line fire at nearly a constant speed. There appeared to be no mountains, tall buildings or trees near the scene, indicating that the fire whirl was generated merely by the interaction between the line fire and ...
