Key homeobox transcription factors regulate the development of the firefly’s adult light organ and bioluminescence

open access: yesNature Communications
Adult fireflies exhibit unique flashing courtship signals, emitted by specialized light organs, which develop mostly independently from larval light organs during the pupal stage.

Firefly genomes illuminate parallel origins of bioluminescence in beetles

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Fireflies and their luminous courtships have inspired centuries of scientific study. Today firefly luciferase is widely used in biotechnology, but the evolutionary origin of bioluminescence within beetles remains unclear.

Delivery of DNA‐encoded vaccines and proteins in mice using cutaneous suction‐mediated transfection

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cutaneous suction‐mediated transfection in mice for delivery of DNA‐encoded vaccines and proteins. A critical limitation of DNA vaccines and other therapeutics is transfection in vivo to produce the encoded antigens or therapeutic proteins. Cutaneous suction‐based methods have demonstrated effectiveness in many animal models and have been successfully ...

Augmenting and Assaying Nav1.1 Protein Quantity for Dravet Syndrome Therapy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Dravet Syndrome (DS) is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy predominantly caused by heterozygous loss‐of‐function variants in SCN1A, which encodes Nav1.1. Conserved upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in SCN1A were validated to regulate translation in reporter assays, demonstrating the therapeutic viability of increasing Nav1.1 from ...

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence and phylogenetic analysis of Luciola lateralis, one of the most famous firefly in Japan (Coleoptera: Lampyridae)

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2017
We will report the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Japanese firefly ‘Heike Botaru’, Luciola lateralis (Coleoptera: Lampyridae). Total length of this mitogenome was 16,719 bp and the composition of each base was A (42.50%), C (9.01%), G (14.16%),

Exploring an Alternative to mRNA Vaccine Cold Chain Storage: MRNA‐Lipid Nanoparticle Stability When Dried in a Polymer Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The nanostructure, size, and function of mRNA‐loaded lipid nanoparticles are evaluated before drying, within polymer microneedles, and after rehydration. The results reveal the polymer and LNP loadings required to recover nanostructure and preserve the delivery performance in dry‐state formulations.
