Resilience among first responders [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background. Emergency rescue personnel can be considered a ‘‘high risk\'\' occupational group in that they could experience a broad range of health and mental health consequences as a result of work-related exposures to critical incidents.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Secondary traumatization in first responders: a systematic review

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Psychotraumatology, 2019
Background: Finding precise definitions of secondary traumatic stress, vicarious traumatization, and compassion fatigue is not easy. While some researchers define these terms differentially, others use them interchangeably.

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Nutrient/TOR signaling controls adipose mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) to regulate organismal growth in Drosophila

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Animals must match their growth rate to available nutrients. We show that in Drosophila larvae, the nutrient‐sensing TOR kinase controls growth by regulating levels of TFAM, a key regulator of mitochondrial function, in the adipose tissue. When nutrients are abundant, high TOR activity suppresses TFAM, lowering mitochondrial bioenergetic activity and ...

QR Coding Application Uptake by Individuals with Communication Challenges, Caregivers, and First Responders

open access: yes, 2023
In emergency situations, individuals with communication challenges and first responders often experience communication barriers. A Quick Response (QR) code mobile application could bridges these barriers and lead to safe, trauma informed care ...

Live high-train low altitude training: responders and non-responders [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Objective: Investigate differences between athletes that responded (improved performance) compared to those that did not, after a 20-day “live high-train low” (LHTL) altitude training camp.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

A Scoping Review of Trauma, Mental Health and First Responders in Australia [PDF]

open access: yes
Exposure to traumatic and/or violent events is an inherent part of the first responder role, which increases the risk of developing acute and chronic mental health symptoms and conditions.

Emergency First Responders’ Misconceptions about Suicide: A Descriptive Study

open access: yesNursing Reports
Background: In 2022, suicide was the second leading cause of external death in Spain (the first among young people aged 15–29 years). This study aims to analyze the presence of myths among emergency first responders and identify the most prevalent false ...
