Ligamentous constraint of the first carpometacarpal joint [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanics, 2021
To examine the role of the ligaments in maintaining stability of the first carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, a sequential ligament sectioning study of sixteen specimens was performed. While a small compressive force was maintained, loads were applied to displace each specimen in four directions - volar, dorsal, radial, and ulnar.

Traumatic dislocation of the first carpometacarpal joint

open access: yesThe American Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2014
We present a case report and review of the literature of traumatic dislocation of the carpometacarpal joint of the left thumb without associated fracture. The injury was sustained while skiing, and after emergency department diagnosis, the dislocation was reduced and the joint stabilized with a splint.

Osteotomy in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint

open access: yesThe Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 1983
Degenerative changes of the first carpometacarpal joint commonly cause pain, weakness and adduction deformity. Many patients respond to conservative treatment, but in resistant cases an abduction wedge osteotomy of the base of the first metacarpal has been found to relieve symptoms with less complications than other operations.

Shape predicts osteoarthritis progression in the first carpometacarpal joint

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology
IntroductionStatistical shape modelling enables global geometric features of bones to be quantified and previously has demonstrated differences between healthy and osteoarthritic populations, including at the first carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.

First Carpometacarpal Joint Instability: Dorsal Ligament Reconstruction

open access: yesTechniques in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery, 2020
The first carpometacarpal (CMC-I) joint has an elaborate ligamentous support. Recent evidence has demonstrated that the dorsal ligament group is imperative for joint stability and that CMC-I joint instability may occur as a consequence of trauma and ligamentous laxity, and other conditions, with possible CMC-I subluxation and the development of ...

[Radiosynoviorthesis of the thumb's carpometacarpal joint]. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Radiosynoviorthesis (RSO) is an established therapeutic method for the local treatment of pain in aseptic joint inflammation (e.g. arthritis, activated osteoarthritis, synovitis). RSO can be used for the treatment of synovial membrane inflammation of the

Partial Denervation of the Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint: A New Technique

open access: yes, 2023
Background: To report the clinical outcomes of partial denervation for the treatment of basilar thumb joint arthritis. Methods: Patients who underwent partial denervation of the basilar thumb joint for osteoarthritis from a single center between 2019 and

Selective involvement of the first carpometacarpal joint in scleroderma [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Roentgenology, 1978
Selective involvement of the first carpometacarpal joint is described in four women with scleroderma. Radiographic abnormalities at this site included osseous erosion, radial subluxation of the metacarpal base, and (in two patients) intraarticular calcification. Perlarticular osseous erosions were noted at adjacent locations in three patients.

The Envelope of Physiological Motion of the First Carpometacarpal Joint [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanical Engineering, 2015
Much of the hand's functional capacity is due to the versatility of the motions at the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, which are presently incompletely defined. The aim of this study was to develop a mathematical model to completely describe the envelope of physiological motion of the thumb CMC joint and then to examine if there were differences in ...
