Per‐ and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Hand Osteoarthritis: Data From the Osteoarthritis Initiative

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Volume 78, Issue 5, Page 1076-1087, May 2026.
Objective To explore whether biologic levels of specific per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and a mixture of PFAS—reflecting the overall effect and accounting for correlations among PFAS—relate to incident hand osteoarthritis (HOA) and progression.

Finite element model creation and stability considerations of complex biological articulation : the human wrist joint [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The finite element method has been used with considerable success to simulate the behaviour of various joints such as the hip, knee and shoulder. It has had less impact on more complicated joints such as the wrist and the ankle.

Thumb Motion is Not the Same as First Carpometacarpal Joint Motion

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanics
Thumb motion is a key outcome metric for assessing disease progression or treatment efficacy. A literature review found nearly 25 % of recent papers incorrectly described their motion measurements as those of the first carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, when in fact their technology was only capable of measuring thumb motion. The aim of this manuscript is to

Excessive texting in pathophysiology of first carpometacarpal joint arthritis

open access: yesPathophysiology, 2006
A Case with isolated pain and swelling at the base of the left thumb is reported. The problem had lasted for 2 years, and it was getting worse with increasing pain also at the base of the right thumb. The X-ray showed a subluxation and an arthritis of the first CMCJ was diagnosed in left hand. An excision arthroplasty was successfully carried out.

MRI-based skeletal hand movement model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The kinematics of the human hand is optimal with respect to force distribution during pinch as well as power grasp, reducing the tissue strain when exerting forces through opposing fingers and optimising contact faces.

Intra-articular Corrective Osteotomy for Bennett’s Fracture Malunion: A Rare Case Report

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Case Reports
Introduction: Bennett’s fracture is an intra-articular fracture-dislocation at the base of the first metacarpal. If inadequately treated, it may lead to malunion and subluxation of the carpometacarpal joint, resulting in pain, stiffness, and functional ...

Dual-purpose extensor pollicis longus transfer for combined type I and IV rheumatoid thumb deformities

open access: yesJPRAS Open
The Nalebuff classification, widely used by hand surgeons, describes six different canonical patterns. However, combined deformities are rarely reported, despite their significant impact on surgical decision-making.

Study on the carpometacarpal, metacarpal and interphalangeal joint of the thumb [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
In order to study the osseous structure and trabecular architecture of the carpometacarpal, metacarpal and interphalangeal joints of the thumb, seventeen thumbs were obtained from nine cadvers. The specimens were fixed with 10 per cent formalin washed in
