A Second-Order Reliability Method With First-Order Efficiency

open access: yesJournal of Mechanical Design, 2010
The first-order reliability method (FORM) is efficient but may not be accurate for nonlinear limit-state functions. The second-order reliability method (SORM) is more accurate but less efficient. To maintain both high accuracy and efficiency, we propose a new second-order reliability analysis method with first-order efficiency.

Reliability sensitivity based on first-order reliability method

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2011
A new efficient and accurate method for reliability sensitivity analysis of mechanical components is proposed based on the first-order reliability method (FORM). This method provides very close approximate solutions for strongly non-linear limit state functions with independent normal random variables.

First Order Reliability Method With Truncated Random Variables

open access: yesJournal of Mechanical Design, 2012
In many engineering applications, the probability distributions of some random variables are truncated; these truncated distributions are resulted from restricting the domain of other probability distributions. If the first order reliability method (FORM) is directly used, the truncated random variables will be transformed into unbounded standard ...

Reliability Methods for Bimodal Distribution With First-Order Approximation

open access: yesASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part B: Mechanical Engineering, 2018
In traditional reliability problems, the distribution of a basic random variable is usually unimodal; in other words, the probability density of the basic random variable has only one peak. In real applications, some basic random variables may follow bimodal distributions with two peaks in their probability density. When binomial variables are involved,

New light on first- and second-order reliability methods

Structural Safety, 1987
Abstract The classical first- and second order reliability methods as applied to complex systems are reviewed. They are justified and improved by new concepts of asymptotic analysis. Various asymptotically exact formulae are presented for the probability of simple failure domains and unions and intersections of such failure domains occuring in the ...

Reliability analysis of tunnels using an adaptive RBF and a first-order reliability method

Computers and Geotechnics, 2018
Abstract A new reliability analysis method for tunnels was developed by integrating an adaptive Radial Basis Function (RBF) metamodeling technique with a First-Order Reliability Method (FORM). In each iteration of the adaptive RBF (A-RBF) technique, an explicit metamodel of the performance function was constructed using an augmented RBF, before an ...

Seismic Reliability of Long-Span Bridges Based on the First Order Reliability Method

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Research, 2010
In this paper, first order reliability method (FORM) is generalized to the seismic reliability analysis of long-span bridges and the first excursion probability of a single tower cable-stayed bridge is studied. The seismic motivation is firstly dispersed as a series of random variables.
