In this chapter we shall develop the formalism of the calculus of variations in simple situations. After a brief review of the necessary and sufficient conditions for extrema of ordinary functions on ℝ n , we investigate in Section 2 some of the basic necessary conditions that are to be satisfied by minimizers of variational integrals $$ \mathcal{F}(

First-order locally variational operators
Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 2003First order Lagrangian densities with first order Euler-Lagrange operator are characterized. Variationally trivial Lagrangians and locally variational operators of first order are determined.

Variations of First-Order Paradigms
2022Abstract As the title indicates, this chapter examines effects of modifications in the methods to study first-order developments. Both complications and simplifications are discussed with respect to two developments: perspective taking and false belief.

Individual Variation in First-Pass Metabolism
Clinical Pharmacokinetics, 1993Individual variation in pharmacokinetics has long been recognised. This variability is extremely pronounced in drugs that undergo extensive first-pass metabolism. Drug concentrations obtained from individuals given the same dose could range several-fold, even in young healthy volunteers.

A variation of first branchial cleft anomalies
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1993First branchial cleft anomalies are considered to be duplications of the external auditory meatus (EAM) and pinna with a sinus that runs parallel to the EAM (Type 1) or with a sinus that runs from an opening in the neck and ends blindly near the cartilaginous EAM (Type 2).

On the First Variation of a Varifold
The Annals of Mathematics, 1972Suppose M is a smooth m dimensional Riemannian manifold and k is a positive integer not exceeding m. Our purpose is to study the first variation of the k dimensional area integrand in M. Our main result is a regularity theorem for weakly defined k dimensional surfaces in M whose first variation of area is summable to a power greater than k.

First variation formula for generalized gauss graphs
Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata, 2001Using direct methods in the calculus of variations, \textit{G. Anzellotti, R. Serapioni}, and \textit{I. Tamanini} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 39, 617-669 (1990; Zbl 0718.49030)] considered the problem of minimizing functionals \(\mathcal F (M)\), defined on a surface \(M\) and depending on the curvatures of \(M\).

Sources of variation in first language acquisition
2018Developmental research has long focused on regularities in language acquisition, minimizing factors that might be responsible for variation. Although researchers are now increasingly concerned with one or another of these factors, this volume brings together research on three different sources of variation: language-specific properties, the nature of ...
