Economic Costs of Historic Overfishing on Recreational Fisheries: South Atlantic & Gulf of Mexico Regions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Ocean fish are a vital renewable resource for human populations, providing food, employment, and recreation. Many fish stocks worldwide, however, are in a state of serious decline due to overfishing, environmental degradation, climate change, and other ...

Adaptive Control of Run‐and‐Tumble Escape in Pursuit‐Evasion Dynamics of Intelligent Active Particles

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
The pursuit‐evasion game is studied for two adversarial active agents, modeled as deterministic self‐steering pursuer and stochastic, cognitive evader. For a successful evasion strategy, the motile target has to exploit all available pursuer information, e.g., by tuning the tumbling frequency with the pursuer distance.

Stocks and fishery of cod (Gadus macrocephalus, Gadidae) in the northwestern Bering Sea in 1965–2022

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО, 2023
For pacific cod in the northwestern Bering Sea, biomass of the summer-fall feeding aggregations in the specified area of their highest density (polygon) is considered as a stock unit.

Lost in aggregation? On the importance of local food price data for food poverty estimates

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper explores within‐country variations in food price dynamics and food poverty estimates by employing local market price data and national consumer price index (CPI) data. Our results show that national CPI data may be useful for approximating national trends but they fail to detect and identify spatial variations in local trends, which

Functional morphology of the pharyngeal teeth of the ocean sunfish, Mola mola

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Many fish use a set of pharyngeal jaws in their throat to aid in prey capture and processing, particularly of large or complex prey. In this study—combining dissection, CT scanning, histology, and performance testing—we demonstrate a novel use of pharyngeal teeth in the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), a species for which pharyngeal jaw anatomy had ...

Inter‐microscope comparability of dental microwear texture data obtained from different optical profilometers: Part II Deriving instrument‐specific correction equations for meta‐analyses using published data

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) has emerged as a valuable method for investigating the feeding ecology of vertebrates. Over the past decade, three‐dimensional topographic data from microscopic regions of tooth surfaces have been collected, and surface texture parameters have been published for both extant and fossil species.
