Common Hematologic Emergencies—Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemias—A Pivotal Role of Clinical Laboratory

open access: yesInternational Journal of Laboratory Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hematologic emergencies are urgent health conditions which result in significant mortality and morbidity unless timely therapeutic measures are taken. Therapeutic success depends on their timely and accurate recognition by hematology laboratory services.

Mycobacterium avium Subsp. paratuberculosis and Human Endogenous Retrovirus in Italian Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

open access: yesImmunology, EarlyView.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), comprising ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is a recognised gastrointestinal disorder. Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is implicated in IBD pathogenesis. Persistent exposure and active infections by MAP may contribute to the unsilencing of human endogenous retroviruses (HERV ...

Comparative cytogenetics among populations of Astyanax altiparanae (Characiformes, Characidae, Incertae sedis)

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2009
Cytogenetic data are presented for Astyanax altiparanae populations from three Brazilian hydrographic systems. The chromosomal data obtained in A. altiparanae support the hypothesis of diploid number conservation.

New insights into the putative XX/XY sex chromosomal system in blue‐eyed red‐fin pleco Hypostomus soniae (Siluriformes, Loricariidae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Blue‐eyed red‐fin pleco Hypostomus soniae (family Loricariidae) presented a putative sex system XX/XY in early stage. Aiming to explore the inter‐populational karyotypic variation and proposed emergence of the XX/XY system, we studied 13 H. soniae individuals (6 males, 7 females) from the Tapajós River.

Chromosomal location of 18S and 5S rDNA sites in Triportheus fish species (Characiformes, Characidae)

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2009
The location of 18S and 5S rDNA sites was determined in eight species and populations of the fish genus Triportheus by using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). The males and females of all species had 2n = 52 chromosomes and a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome
