Fish diversity

2017
Fish diversity is considered in terms of variety of their morphological, taxonomic, habitat and population attributes. Fish, with over 30, 000 current species, represent the largest group of vertebrates. The complexity of classification of a group of this size and antiquity, together with recognition of additional species, demands continuous ongoing ...

Specialization boosts reef fish functional diversity

Nature Ecology & Evolution, 2018
Rapid evolution of morphological variations is shown to be linked to positions of coral reef fishes at trophic-web extremes. This finding suggests that current fishing practices on coral reefs that target top predators and seaweed-grazing fishes may undermine the potential for future species diversification.

River network connectivity and fish diversity

Science of The Total Environment, 2019
Frequent and severe disruptions of natural river flows associated with human activities significantly alter hydrological connectivity in large river networks, with deleterious effects on fish diversity. Understanding the relationship between fish diversity and river network connectivity is fundamental to ensuring species persistence, ecosystem ...

Exotic fishes and freshwater fish diversity

Zoos' Print Journal, 2000
The freshwater aquatic biodiversity is depleting alarmingly due to the introduction of exotic species and other anthropogenic activities. The indiscriminate transfer of exotic fishes has brought about a wide array of problems including extirpation of indigenous species. The exotics compete with the indigenous species for food, habitat and may even prey

Double jeopardy for fish diversity

Nature Climate Change, 2021
As climate change impacts marine ecosystems, fish must migrate or adapt and eventually speciate to preserve their diversity. Research now shows that warming has coincided with reduced fish body size throughout evolutionary history, hindering both preservation strategies.

Fish Species Diversity in Lakes

The American Naturalist, 1974
Stepwise multiple regression was used to obtain preliminary insights into the environmental parameters which influence the number of fish species occurring in lakes. Results are summarized as follows: 1. For a sample of 70 lakes and inland seas from throughout the world, surface area and latitude account for about one-third of the variability in fish ...

Patterns in Freshwater Fish Diversity

2022
This chapter provides a brief overview of freshwater fish diversity globally, the factors underlying diversity patterns among and within river basins and phylogenetic groups, and the main threats to this diversity in the Anthropocene. Continental freshwaters represent among the most diverse and species-dense habitats on Earth, with almost 18,000 fish ...

Turbine‐Intake Fish‐Diversion System

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1990
The development of a fish‐diversion system to be used in the turbine intakes of the Wanapum and Priest Rapids developments on the Columbia River, in the state of Washington, is described. The system uses a passive‐bar screen, installed through the emergency gate well, to produce a flow pattern that deflects downstream‐migrating juvenile salmonids into ...

Late Cretaceous Antarctic fish diversity

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2006
Abstract New material from the Santa Marta Formation (late Coniacian-?early Maastrichtian) of James Ross Island contributes significantly to the current knowledge of Late Cretaceous Antarctic fish diversity. The taxon list for the Santa Marta Formation is extended, and new records of neoselachians and teleosts are reported.
