State of knowledge of aquatic ecosystem and fisheries of the Lake Edward System, East Africa

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries
Poor and unreliable knowledge of the status of freshwater fisheries limits their inclusion in governance processes, thereby impeding effective management measures. This threatens the livelihoods of people, particularly in developing countries.

Fish sex: why so diverse? [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Neurobiology, 2009
In most animal species, males and females behave differently, especially when it comes to sex and related social behaviors. These behaviors evolved to ensure successful reproduction and typically include some genetically pre-programmed displays. There are ~ 25,000 known species of fishes, by far the largest group of vertebrates, and they express a ...

Fish assemblages across the Mediterranean Sea and the effects of protection from fishing = I Popolamenti ittici nel Mediterraneo e gli effetti della protezione dall’impatto della pesca [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Several studies have assessed the effectiveness of individual marine protected areas (MPAs) in protecting fish assemblages, but regional assessments of multiple parks are scarce.

Diverse parentage relationships in paternal mouthbrooding fishes

open access: yesBiology Letters, 2022
While mouthbrooding is not an uncommon parental care strategy in fishes, paternal mouthbrooding only occurs in eight fish families and is little studied. The high cost of paternal mouthbrooding to the male implies a low risk of investment in another male's offspring but genetic parentage patterns are poorly known for paternal mouthbrooders.
