Fisheries policy provides fundamental insights for trade lawyers. The scholar and practitioner of international trade law learns from a study of the utilization and trade of marine living resources about common dilemmas: the pressure that trade places on the sustainability of production; the constraints on consumers seeking to discriminate on the basis

We analysed the extent to which European politicians have adhered to scientific recommendations on annual total allowable catches (TACs) from 1987 to 2011, covering most of the period of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). For the 11 stocks examined, TACs were set higher than scientific recommendations in 68% of decisions.

“Economics of fisheries” is a field of economic research that has developed since the mid-1950s. The core of the research in its early stage was to find conditions for optimal exploitation of fish stocks over time. The purpose is to inform policymakers about harvest levels that maximize net present value of the fish stock.

Formal analyses of long-term global marine fisheries prospects have yet to be performed, because fisheries research focuses on local, species-specific management issues. Extrapolation of present trends implies expansion of bottom fisheries into deeper waters, serious impact on biodiversity, and declining global catches, the last possibly aggravated by ...

At the present time, between 60 and 70 million metric tons of sea foods are harvested annually of which 90% are fish (1 metric ton = 1 tonne = 1000kg)(Figure 9.1). Sea food is perhaps the only world food whose yield is increasing more quickly than human population growth.

Sandy-beach fisheries constitute complex social-ecological systems, which are found in a range of countries with different degrees of development. These exploited resources include fish, clams, crustaceans, and polychaetes in three main types of fisheries: (1) subsistence, (2) recreational, and (3) commercial.

Landings of the spurdog, Squalus acanthias, at Mevagissey reflect the changes in phosphate at the neighbouring International Hydrographic Station Ei.It is suggested that commercial landings of rays and skates ought to follow major changes in nutrient content of the overlying water with a time lag of some years.
