Loss of proton‐sensing GPR4 reduces tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
G protein‐coupled receptor 4 (GPR4) is a pH‐sensing receptor activated by acidic pH. GPR4 expression is increased in patients with inflammatory bowel disease who are at high risk of developing colorectal cancer. In mouse models, loss of GPR4 attenuated tumor progression. This correlated with increased IL2 and natural killer cell activity.

Synthesis of biosafe spirulina-derived carbon dots and their fluorescence imaging in zebrafish

open access: yesResults in Chemistry
Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as promising fluorescent nanomaterials owing to their superior optical properties and favorable biocompatibility. In the present study, environmentally friendly CDs were synthesized from spirulina via a hydrothermal ...

Replacing sea mud with attachment of suspension cage can improve growth and gut health for sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
During the suspension cage culture procedure, a substantial quantity of attachments from the suspension cage will amass in the tidal flats, resulting in environmental pollution and resource wastage.

TRPM8 levels determine tumor vulnerability to channel agonists

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TRPM8 is a Ca2+ permissive channel. Regardless of the amount of its transcript, high levels of TRPM8 protein mark different tumors, including prostate, breast, colorectal, and lung carcinomas. Targeting TRPM8 with channel agonists stimulates inward calcium currents followed by emptying of cytosolic Ca2+ stores in cancer cells.

Threatened Fishes of Arkansas [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
Intensive field collecting throughout Arkansas and a survey of literature and museum records revealed 37 fish species and subspecies in Arkansas to be threatened by human activities. Of these 37 threatened forms, seven are considered rare and endangered.

Systematic profiling of cancer‐fibroblast interactions reveals drug combinations in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Fibroblasts, cells in the tumor environment, support ovarian cancer cell growth and alter morphology and drug response. We used fibroblast and cancer cell co‐culture models to test 528 drugs and discovered new drugs for combination treatment. We showed that adding Vorinostat or Birinapant to standard chemotherapy may improve drug response, suggesting ...
