Large mesopelagic fishes biomass and trophic efficiency in the open ocean

open access: yesNature Communications, 2014
With a current estimate of ~1,000 million tons, mesopelagic fishes likely dominate the world total fishes biomass. However, recent acoustic observations show that mesopelagic fishes biomass could be significantly larger than the current estimate. Here we

Comparison of kinship‐identification methods for robust stock assessment using close‐kin mark–recapture data for Pacific bluefin tuna

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
In this study, we compared three methods for kinship identification using different algorithms in samples of wild Pacific bluefin tuna and generated genotyping data. The three methods resulted in different numbers of inferred kinship pairs for both generated and actual data. Particularly for the half‐sibling pairs, considerable number of false‐positive

Molecular Identification and Functional Characterization of LC-PUFA Biosynthesis Elongase (elovl2) Gene in Chinese Sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis)

open access: yesAnimals
Elongases of very-long-chain fatty acids (Elovls) are critical rate-limiting enzymes that are involved in LC-PUFA biosynthesis through catalyzing the two-carbon elongation of a pre-existing fatty acyl chain. Thus far, several Elovls have been extensively

Parental investment matters for maternal and offspring immune defense in the mouthbrooding cichlid Astatotilapia burtoni

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2017
Background Parental care, while increasing parental fitness through offspring survival, also bears cost to the care-giving parent. Consequentially, trade offs between parental care and other vitally important traits, such as the immune system seem ...

Fishing Can Turn Big Fish Into Small Fish [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers for Young Minds, 2020
People affect animals and plants all over the world. One example is by fishing. Fishing selects fish with unique traits. First, fishers take large fish out of the water. So, populations become small and have only small fish left in them. These fish have babies for the first time when they are younger and smaller.

Insights into the renal pathophysiology in Hermansky‐Pudlak syndrome‐1 from urinary extracellular vesicle proteomics and a new mouse model

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hermansky‐Pudlak syndrome type 1 (HPS‐1) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder with poorly understood renal involvement. Urinary extracellular vesicle (uEV) proteomics and a novel Hps1 mouse model reveal mitochondrial abnormalities and lipid accumulation in HPS‐1 kidney proximal tubule cells. Serum ApoA1 correlates with kidney function in our patient

The Tree of Life and a New Classification of Bony Fishes

open access: yesPLOS Currents, 2013
The tree of life of fishes is in a state of flux because we still lack a comprehensive phylogeny that includes all major groups. The situation is most critical for a large clade of spiny-finned fishes, traditionally referred to as percomorphs, whose ...

The [2Fe‐2S] cluster of mitochondrial outer membrane protein mitoNEET has an O2‐regulated nitric oxide access tunnel

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The mitochondrial outer membrane iron–sulphur ([Fe‐S]) protein mitoNEET is a target of the type‐2 diabetes drug pioglitazone. Its unknown molecular function is linked to respiratory complex activity and mitochondrial function. We discovered that O2 protects the mitoNEET [2Fe‐2S] cluster against NO oxidation and desensitization towards reduction by H2S.

Potential Targets and Signaling Mechanisms of Cinnamaldehyde Enhancing Intestinal Function and Nutritional Regulation in Fat Greenling (Hexagrammos otakii)

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition
Cinnamaldehyde is an ideal feed additive with good immune enhancement and anti-inflammatory regulation effects. However, the anti-inflammatory regulation mechanism in fat greenling (Hexagrammos otakii, H. otakii) remains unclear.
