Sanitation felling against the European spruce bark beetle: A matter of intensity and forest type Tagli fitosanitari contro il bostrico tipografo: una questione di intensità e tipologia forestale

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 28, Issue 3, Page 382-397, August 2026.
We assess the effect of sanitation felling performed in 2022 in North‐Eastern Italy on bark beetle damage that occurred in 2023 across eight spruce forest types, as evaluated using multispectral satellite imagery. Bark beetle damage was reduced only at very high or very low sanitation felling rates.

Host phenology‐driven infestation patterns of the carob moth (Ectomyelois ceratoniae) in Mediterranean walnut orchards: insights from comparison with codling moth (Cydia pomonella)

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 7, Page 6877-6889, July 2026.
In Mediterranean walnut orchards, Ectomyelois ceratoniae replaces Cydia pomonella as the primary pest. Capture peaks between packing tissue brown (PTB) stage and husk dehiscence define a critical window for monitoring and early harvest to prevent kernel infestation.

RNAi‐mediated gene silencing of a 26S proteasome subunit increases mortality of the Japanese beetle Popillia japonica

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 1, Page 1066-1078, January 2026.
We propose the regulatory particle non‐ATPase subunit 6 of the 26S proteasome as a first good promising RNA interference target candidate to control the Japanese beetle Popillia japonica. This will help to optimize a double‐stranded RNA insecticide against this priority pest with low off‐target effects on pollinators on a gene sequence‐based prediction.

Role of science and scientists in public environmental policy debates: The case of EU agrochemical and Nature Restoration Regulations

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 8, Page 1772-1788, August 2025.
Abstract Halting biodiversity loss, mitigating global warming and maintaining the long‐term viability of rural and urban areas requires urgent policy action. However, environmental policies often trigger resistance and highly polarised public debates, with some actors employing pseudo‐scientific claims.

Whole Genome Resequencing Reveals Origins and Global Invasion Pathways of the Japanese Beetle Popillia japonica

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 16, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Invasive species are an increasing global threat given their ability to rapidly spread and adapt to novel environments. The adverse ecological and economic impacts of invasive species highlight the critical need to understand the mechanisms that underpin invasion processes and success.

Observations on Rhamnus alaternus Naturally Infected by Xylella fastidiosa subsp. multiplex ST87 in the Mediterranean Maquis of Monte Argentario (Tuscany, Italy)

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 74, Issue 6, Page 1813-1829, August 2025.
At Monte Argentario (Italy), the severity of symptoms on Rhamnus alaternus, a drought‐resistant species of the Mediterranean maquis, is attributable to the progression of Xylella fastidiosa ST87 infection only in part. ABSTRACT The diseases caused by the xylem‐inhabiting bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) are considered a consequence of the drastic ...
