Influence of Bulla Volume on Postbullectomy Outcome

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal, Volume 8, Issue 4, Page 233-238, 2001., 2001
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the contribution of the resected volume and the presence of associated, functionally significant emphysema to the postoperative improvement of pulmonary function after resection of giant lung bullae. DESIGN: Patients undergoing elective surgery for giant bullae who had had complete pulmonary function and radiographic studies ...

Detection of Peripheral Ventilation Inhomogeneity in Smokers

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 27-33, 1997., 1997
BACKGROUND: In smokers, ‘small airways’ narrowing alters the conventional, vital capacity single breath washout (SBWVC). Although, in some studies, the test predicts smokers at risk of developing chronic airflow limitation, its wide variability partly explains its poor positive predictive value. An alternative explanation for the test’s poor predictive

Congo Basin Carbon Cycle Responses to Global Change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 1, January 2026.
Understanding the resilience of the Congo Basin carbon cycle in the face of current and future pressures requires a detailed understanding of its response to past and present drivers of change. Building on a pantropical framework of drivers and possible regional mechanisms for resilience, this review provides the first comprehensive assessment of Congo

Spatial context allows the evolution of the control of nitrification by plants

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 11, Page 3478-3490, November 2025.
Using a theoretical approach, we show that assuming that the effects of the control of nitrification are spatially restricted to the rhizosphere, the control of nitrification is likely to be selected in perennial plants and ecosystems in which nitrate losses are greater than ammonium losses. The selected strategy optimizes biomass production.

Photosynthesis, water‐use and nitrogen relate to both plant height and leaf structure in 60 species from the Mediterranean

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 2, Page 567-582, February 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Within individuals and/or species of trees, the structure and gas exchange of sun‐exposed leaves from the outer part of the canopy have been found to relate to sampling height.

Financial Barriers to Reducing Nitrogen Pollution in Dutch Dairy Farms Obstacles financiers à la réduction de la pollution par l'azote dans les exploitations laitières néerlandaises Finanzielle Hürden für die Verringerung der Stickstoffüberschüsse in niederländischen Milchviehbetrieben

open access: yesEuroChoices, Volume 23, Issue 3, Page 53-58, December 2024.
Summary Nitrogen fertiliser boosts agricultural yields, but its excessive use destabilises ecosystems. That is why Dutch policy makers want to reduce nitrogen pollution on dairy farms. Cleaner technologies and structural changes could reduce farm emissions. We benchmarked farms, organised an expert consultation, and reviewed the literature to determine

Censored autoregressive regression models with Student‐t innovations

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, Volume 52, Issue 3, Page 804-828, September 2024.
Abstract Data collected over time are common in applications and may contain censored or missing observations, making it difficult to use standard statistical procedures. This article proposes an algorithm to estimate the parameters of a censored linear regression model with errors serially correlated and innovations following a Student‐t distribution.

Rocky outcrops form islands of high and unique tree biodiversity within an ocean of grass in Serengeti National Park

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, September 2024.
Abstract African savannahs are characterised by a high plant diversity, partly resulting from a high turnover in community compositions across space. However, it is poorly understood what is driving this spatial turnover in plant communities. Here, we investigate to which extent the presence of rocky outcrops (also called kopjes) explains the community
