Introduction to Flapping Wing Design

2015
This chapter treats the main choices, issues, and tradeoffs in the design of flapping wing MAVs. In particular, we discuss the implications of different tail and wing configurations, the energy source and various types of actuators. We also show how choices elementary to aircraft design, such as the trade-off between fuel/battery mass and payload mass ...

Computation of Flapping Wing Sound

13th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference (28th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference), 2007
In the present study, unsteady flow and acoustic characteristics of the flapping wing are numerically investigated. The Reynolds number based on a maximum translational velocity of the wing and the wing chord length is Re=8800 and Mach number is M=0.0485.

Flexible flapping wings with self-organized microwrinkles

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2015
Bio-inspired flapping wings with a wrinkled wing membrane were designed and fabricated. The wings consist of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic frames and a polymer film with microscale wrinkles inspired by bird feathers and the corrugations of insect wings.

Biomimetic flapping wing aerial vehicle

2008 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics, 2009
This paper presents a vertical take-off and hover capable flapping wing aerial vehicle using a biomimetic approach; replicating the hovering patterns of dragonflies and hummingbirds. The prototype uses a spatial mechanism driven by a rotary actuator which generates an angle of attack during each wing stroke. A 98g, 380mm span two wing prototype capable

Wake alleviation properties of triangular-flapped wings

AIAA Journal, 2002
Thewakealleviationproperties of wingswith outboard, triangulareapextensionsareestimated usingdatafrom particle image velocimetry. The experiments are conducted in a towing tank at chord-based Reynolds numbers of O O(10 5). The triangular-eapped wings generate two unequal strength, counter-rotating vortex pairs that have circulation strength ratios ...

The gust-mitigating potential of flapping wings

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2016
Nature's flapping-wing flyers are adept at negotiating highly turbulent flows across a wide range of scales. This is in part due to their ability to quickly detect and counterract disturbances to their flight path, but may also be assisted by an inherent aerodynamic property of flapping wings.

Mathematical modeling for flapping wings

2012 International Conference on Applied and Theoretical Electricity (ICATE), 2012
This paper presents a mathematical model of flapping wings mechanism. MAV (Micro-aerial vehicle) kinematics model is studied by using a drive engine and two movable levers. The study of the two movable leavers is based on the mechanisms' theory; by means of the existing experimental models, we make an analysis in amplitude.
