Conceptual design of flapping-wing micro air vehicles

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2012
Traditional micro air vehicles (MAVs) are miniature versions of full-scale aircraft from which their design principles closely follow. The first step in aircraft design is the development of a conceptual design, where basic specifications and vehicle size are established.

Aerodynamics of Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicles

47th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including The New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2009
The research study outlined in the paper addresses the aerodynamic features of flexible flapping wings used in micro air vehicles called ornithopters. Aerodynamic force measurements were conducted for the 25-cm and 74-cm-wing-span models at different airflow velocities and flapping frequencies.

Experimental Simulation of Flapping Wings for Nano-Air-Vehicles

29th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 2011
apping wings operating at high reduced frequency with a complex two-dimensional or three-dimensional pattern. The experimental measurements are demonstrated by the test cases of two-dimensional and three-dimensional apping wings, designed according to the proposed notional nano-air-vehicle at a hovering condition.

Vibrational Control in Flapping-Wing Micro-Air-Vehicles

2018 Annual American Control Conference (ACC), 2018
Flapping-Wing Micro-Air-Vehicles (FWMAVs) are bio-inspired air vehicles that mimic insect and bird flight. The dynamic behavior of these systems is typically described by a multi-body, multi-time-scale, nonlinear, time-varying dynamical system. Interestingly, this rich dynamics lead to unconventional stabilization mechanisms whose study essentially ...

SUEX Flapping Wing Mechanisms for Pico Air Vehicles

Volume 2: Mechanics and Behavior of Active Materials; Integrated System Design and Implementation; Bio-Inspired Materials and Systems; Energy Harvesting, 2012
This paper introduces a simple and low cost flapping wing mechanism fabricated monolithically from SUEX dry film, an epoxy based negative photoresist similar to SU-8. The developed process has fewer steps compared to other methods, does not use precious metals, and greatly reduces processing time and cost.

Wing Performance Characterization for Flapping Wing Air Vehicles

Volume 6B: 37th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, 2013
Flapping wing air vehicles offer many useful flight characteristics due to their versatility, as proven by flying animals. Wing design significantly influences the performance. However designing successful wings presents significant challenges. Efficient matching of the drive motors to the flapping wings is necessary to overcome the highly constrained ...

Toward Flapping Wing Control of Micro Air Vehicles

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 2012
Research into insect-sized flappingwingmicro air vehicles has exploded over the last decade, yetmost of this work has focused on simply achieving flight, while leaving the issue of how to control it to future researchers. Here, previous work in the field of flapping wing control is summarized and each proposed technique is evaluated according to how ...

Super Maneuverable, Flapping Wing Micro-Air-Vehicles

2009
Abstract : Interest in the development of super-maneuverable, micro-air-vehicles has led to the re-examination of basic flight modes, particularly, those that are inspired by biological observations. The majority of experimental and numerical studies related to flapping flight have explored the relationships between the thrust coefficient (and ...

Classification of Flapping Wing Mechanisms for Micro Air Vehicles

Volume 4: 36th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, Parts A and B, 2012
The purpose of this paper is to categorize the current state of technology in flapping wing mechanisms of micro air vehicles (MAVs). One of the major components of MAVs is the flapping mechanism, which actuates wings to generate sufficient lift and propulsion force.

Longitudinal Flight Dynamics of Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicles

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 2012
The multibody flight dynamics of flapping-wing micro air vehicles are inherently complex. Stability analyses and control algorithms are best applied to equations of motion in first-order form. This paper presents a method for approximating the first-order equations of motion for a flapping-wingmicro air vehicle.
