De naturliga variationerna i trämaterialet orsakar stora variationer i de mekaniska egenskaperna. Denna nackdel kan delvis kompenseras genom att omvandla trä till träbaserade produkter (Engineering Wood Products) som t.ex. limträ, I-balkar och lamellträ. För några decennier sedan lanserades fibrekompositer som ett nytt material inom anläggningssektorn.
