Abstract We present new measurements of non-uniformly flexible pitching foils fabricated with a rigid leading section joined to a flexible trailing section. This construction enables us to vary the bending pattern and resonance condition of the foils independently.

Swimming of a Flexible Hydrofoil near a Free Surface
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1964AbstractThis paper represents some of the results obtained from a study which extended an exact linearized potential theory to include the problem of the thrust generated by an oscillating, flexible, flat, two‐dimensional plate of zero thickness moving near the free surface of an ideal incompressible fluid.

Experimental studies on the motion of a flexible hydrofoil
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1964A thin, flexible hydrofoil has been used as a model to simulate the swimming of a two-dimensional fish in an ideal, incompressible fluid, as treated in recent theoretical papers. The apparatus is described in some detail and typical data are compared with the predictions of theory.

Hydroelastic Responses of a Flexible Hydrofoil in Turbulent, Cavitating Flow
ASME 2010 7th International Symposium on Fluid-Structure Interactions, Flow-Sound Interactions, and Flow-Induced Vibration and Noise: Volume 3, Parts A and B, 2010The objective of this work is to develop and validate a robust method to simulate the hydroelastic responses of flexible hydrofoil in turbulent, cavitating flow. A two degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) model is used to simulate the plunging and pitching motion at the foil tip due to bending and twisting deformation of a 3-D cantilevered hydrofoil.

Steady Performance of a Flexible Hydrofoil Near a Free Surface
Journal of Ship Research, 1990A linearized cavity-flow theory is used to develop a mathematical model to study the steady characteristics of a flexible hydrofoil near a free surface. The Galerkin method is employed to account for the mutual interaction between the fluid and structure forces.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Study of a Flexible Flapping Hydrofoil Propulsor
Volume 2: CFD and VIV, 2016A CFD study to understand the hydrodynamics and fluid flow around a chordwise flexible hydrofoil with combined sway and yaw motion which imitates the caudal fin flapping in thunniforms, is presented. The dependency of motion parameters of the flexible flapping hydrofoil to its propulsive performance is studied by carrying out the analyses over a ...

The transient characteristics of cloud cavitating flow over a flexible hydrofoil
International Journal of Multiphase Flow, 2018Abstract The objective of this paper is to investigate the two-phase flow structure of cloud cavitation over a flexible hydrofoil with particular emphasis on cavitating flow-induced vibration and the cavity shedding dynamics via combined experimental and numerical studies.

Bending Flutter and Torsional Flutter of Flexible Hydrofoil Struts
1973A large body of experimental and theoretical flutter results for hydrofoil struts were analyzed to determine significant characteristics. Flutter was found to occur in two different structural mode shapes, corresponding to a predominantly bending mode and a predominantly torsional mode, respectively.

Numerical research on hydrodynamic characteristics of fish-like flexible oscillating hydrofoil
2018 IEEE 8th International Conference on Underwater System Technology: Theory and Applications (USYS), 2018Hydrofoil is a common structure of underwater machinery and has good hydrodynamic performance. At present, most of the studies on oscillating hydrofoils are on rigid hydrofoils, but few on hydrodynamics of flexible oscillating hydrofoils. In this paper, the kinetic model of flexible hydrofoil is established by imitating tuna swimming.

A Study on Fluid-Structure Interaction Performance of a Flexible Hydrofoil
Volume 2: CFD and FSI, 2018To research the flexible hydrofoils’ hydroelastic response, the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) characteristic investigation is conducted on the basis of the analysis of a rigid hydrofoil’s hydrodynamic performance. For a rigid cantilevered rectangular hydrofoil, the pitching hydrodynamic performance is calculated using boundary motion with remeshing
