Microbial autotrophy driven by extracellular electrons generated from mechanical forces via flexoelectricity

open access: yesNature Communications
Mechanical force has recently emerged as a microbial energy source through direct mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion. However, the flexoelectric effect, a universal mechanoelectrical coupling phenomenon, remains underexplored as an energy source ...

Flexoelectricity in nematic domain walls

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2008
Flexoelectric effects are studied in the domain walls of a nematic liquid crystal device showing the Freedericksz transition. Walls parallel to the alignment direction have a strong twist distortion and an electro-optic effect dominated by e1-e3 is seen.

Static and free vibration responses of nanobeams considering flexoelectricity and surface effect

open access: yesAIP Advances
In this paper, the electro-mechanical behavior of a flexoelectric nanobeam, considering the surface effect, is studied with an induced electric potential.

Flexoelectric Instability in Bent-Core Nematic Liquid Crystals

open access: yesCrystals
We develop a theoretical model for the flexoelectric instability in bent-core nematic liquid crystals, focusing on the coupling between elastic distortions and an external electric field through flexoelectric polarization.

Flexoelectric Effect in Biaxial Nematics

open access: yesActa Physica Polonica A, 2012
The flexoelectric (FE) effect provides a linear coupling between electric polarization and orientational deformation in liquid crystals. It influences many electrooptical phenomena and it is used in some bistable nematic devices. A statistical theory of dipole FE polarization in biaxial nematic liquid crystals is used to calculate temperature ...

Influence of Flexoelectric Coupling and Interfacial Imperfection on Shear Horizontal Wave Propagation in a Piezoflexoelectric Layer over an Elastic Substrate

open access: yesMathematics
This study analytically investigates shear horizontal (SH) wave propagation in a layered structure consisting of a piezoflexoelectric (PFE) layer bonded to an elastic substrate, considering an imperfect interface.

Self-powered tunable photodetection via flexoelectric engineering of single-phase 2HMoS2

open access: yesJournal of Materiomics
Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has shown considerable potential for photodetection, yet existing MoS2-based photodetectors require either external voltage bias or complex heterojunctions.

Topological transition from a hopfion to a toron via flexoelectric self-polarization in chiral liquid crystals

open access: yesPhysical Review Research
The presence of topological defects in apolar chiral liquid crystals causes orientational distortions, leading to nonuniform strain. This nonuniform strain generates an electric polarization response due to the flexoelectric effect, which induces an ...

Flexoelectric MEMS

open access: yes
Piezoelectricity and flexoelectricity are two independent but not incompatible forms of electromechanical response exhibited by nanoscale ferroelectrics. Here, we show that flexoelectricity can either enhance or suppress the piezoelectric response of the cantilever depending on the ferroelectric polarity and lead to a diode-like asymmetric (two-state ...
