Measuring inverse flexoelectric effect at the macro scale and flexoelectric actuator

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics
The flexoelectric effect is a two-way mechanical-electrical coupling. The dielectric is polarized when subjected to bending moments, and inversely, the electric field can also induce strain gradients within the dielectric.

Manipulation of field-effect transistors by flexoelectric effect

Applied Physics Letters
Flexoelectric field-effect transistors (FE-FETs) hold significant potential for applications in biomedical and healthcare sensing fields. While existing piezoelectric FETs sense physiological signals based on pressure or compressive strain, movements ...

Flexoelectric effect in a bent-core mesogen

Liquid Crystals, 2009
The flexoelectricity in a bent-core liquid crystal was evaluated quantitatively using two independent electrooptic methods. The absolute value of the bend flexoelectric coefficient e 3 was measured to be about 15.8 pC m−1. Our results revealed that there is little difference between the flexoelectricity of bent-core mesogens and that of conventional ...

Shape model for the molecular interpretation of the flexoelectric effect

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2001
A mean-field model for the flexoelectric polarization in nematics is presented, based on a continuous description of director deformations coupled to the molecular degrees of freedom via surface interactions. In such a framework, a consistent picture of the flexoelectric effect is obtained, including both dipolar and quadrupolar contributions, with a ...

Surface polarization and flexoelectric effect

Journal of Applied Physics, 1991
In order to evaluate the order of magnitude and to establish the origin of the surface polarization, experimental investigations of direct piezoelectrical effect in nematic liquid crystals have been performed. The experimental setup used allows the temperature dependence of the electrical response of a nematic sample, submitted to periodic acoustic ...

On the flexoelectric effect in nematics

Liquid Crystals, 1997
Flexoelectricity is a general and fundamental phenomenon in liquid crystals. It describes the linear coupling between an applied electric field and gradients in the director field. Whereas flexoelectricity has for decades been regarded as only of academic interest, we think it is time to point out its considerable application potential, for instance in

Flexoelectric Effects in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Science and Technology. Section A. Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals, 1997
Abstract We discuss flexoelectricity in cholesteric liquid crystals. In particular we point out that experimental results obtained by Patel and Meyer can be understood as surface effects. In addition we discuss similarities and differences between static and dynamic effects associated with flexoelectricity in cholesteric and nematic liquid crystals.
