Flexoelectricity-Driven Mechanical Switching of Polarization in Metastable Ferroelectrics

Physical Review Letters, 2022
Flexoelectricity-based mechanical switching of ferroelectric polarization has recently emerged as a fascinating alternative to conventional polarization switching using electric fields. Here, we demonstrate hyperefficient mechanical switching of polarization exploiting metastable ferroelectricity that inherently holds a unique mechanical response.

Flexoelectricity and Surface Polarization

Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals, 1977
The comparison between experimental condition in two experiments measuring MBBA bend flexo-coefficient and an analogy with lyotropic liquid crystals lead to the concept that the reason for the big ...

Impact of the flexocaloric effect on polarization in the flexoelectric layer

open access: yesInternational Journal of Solids and Structures, 2016
Abstract The paper presents a theoretical study on the distribution of polarization and mechanical stresses in the flexoelectric layer accounting for the flexocaloric effect. It is assumed that the flexoelectric material has neither piezoelectric nor electrostrictive properties.

Flexoelectric polarization in hybrid nematic films

Physical Review E, 2001
Hybrid films of the nematic liquid crystal penthylcyanobiphenyl (5CB) on the surface of glycerol were studied in the presence of an in-plane electric field. In this geometry there is a macroscopic flexoelectric polarization P(f) with a component in the film plane that couples linearly to the field.

Flexoelectrically induced polarization in polar smectic films

Ferroelectrics, 2000
Abstract Phenomenological model of racemic ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystals, which considers both the tilt and the polarization order parameters explicitly, is presented. Free-standing films with few layers are analyzed within the model.

Surface polarization and flexoelectric effect

Journal of Applied Physics, 1991
In order to evaluate the order of magnitude and to establish the origin of the surface polarization, experimental investigations of direct piezoelectrical effect in nematic liquid crystals have been performed. The experimental setup used allows the temperature dependence of the electrical response of a nematic sample, submitted to periodic acoustic ...

Combined polarization field gradient and strain field gradient effects in elastic flexoelectric materials

open access: yesMathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2017
We consider a constitutive model for the behavior of elastic flexoelectric materials including strain gradient fields and polarization gradient fields.

Flexoelectricity in Bulk and Nanoscale Polar and Non-Polar Dielectrics

Solid State Phenomena, 2015
Piezoelectricity (PE) is defined as the polarization under homogeneous application of stress on polar/non-centrosymmetry/no-inversion symmetry dielectrics, whereas it has been commonly accepted that flexoelectricity (FLX) is the induced polarization due to strain gradient in any polar/nonpolar dielectrics, the latter effect is universal and can be ...

Flexoelectric Effect and Shock-Induced Polarization in Polar Liquids

Physics of Atomic Nuclei, 2019
An approach is proposed for determining the flexoelectric coefficient for polar liquids based on the results of an investigation of the polarization of dielectrics induced by an electric field and a shock wave. It is shown that the initial shock-induced polarization and the flexoelectric effect may be considered equivalent concepts linking the ...
