What is the function of mitochondrial networks? A theoretical assessment of hypotheses and proposal for future research [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Mitochondria can change their shape from discrete isolated organelles to a large continuous reticulum. The cellular advantages underlying these fused networks are still incompletely understood.

A flashing light may not be that flashy: A systematic review on critical fusion frequencies.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
BackgroundLight pollution could represent one of the main drivers behind the current biodiversity erosion. While the effects of many light components on biodiversity have already been studied, the influence of flicker remains poorly understood.

Potential biological and ecological effects of flickering artificial light. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Organisms have evolved under stable natural lighting regimes, employing cues from these to govern key ecological processes. However, the extent and density of artificial lighting within the environment has increased recently, causing widespread ...

A deep learning based cognitive model to probe the relation between psychophysics and electrophysiology of flicker stimulus

open access: yesBrain Informatics
The flicker stimulus is a visual stimulus of intermittent illumination. A flicker stimulus can appear flickering or steady to a human subject, depending on the physical parameters associated with the stimulus.

Efficiency in Magnocellular Processing: A Common Deficit in Neurodevelopmental Disorders

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2020
Several neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) including Developmental Dyslexia (DD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but not Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), are reported to show deficits in global motion processing.

Engineering tandem VHHs to target different epitopes to enhance antibody‐dependent cell‐mediated cytotoxicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tandem VHH targeting distinct EGFR epitopes were engineered into a monovalent bispecific antibody (7D12‐EGA1‐Fc) with more potent ADCC without increasing affinity to EGFR. Structural modeling of 7D12‐EGA1‐Fc showed cross‐linking of separate EGFR domains to enhance CD16a engagement on NK cells.

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

“some kind of thing it aint us but yet its in us”: David Mitchell, Russell Hoban, and metafiction after the millennium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This article appraises the debt that David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas owes to the novels of Russell Hoban, including, but not limited to, Riddley Walker. After clearly mapping a history of Hoban’s philosophical perspectives and Mitchell’s inter-textual genre-
