FLiES-SIF version 1.0

open access: yes, 2019
FLiES-SIF version 1.0 is a Monte Carlo ray tracing model for Sun-induced Chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) simulation in heterogeneous forest canopies. The source code was written in FORTRAN and R. The README file describes how to install and use the FLiES-

Development of odour-baited flytraps for sampling the African latrine fly, Chrysomya putoria, a putative vector of enteric diseases. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
African pit latrines produce prodigious numbers of the latrine fly, Chrysomya putoria, a putative vector of diarrhoeal pathogens. We set out to develop a simple, low-cost odour-baited trap for collecting C. putoria in the field.

Parasitóides de Fannia pusio (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Fanniidae) coletados em Caldas Novas, Goiás, Brasil Parasitoids of Fannia pusio (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Fanniidae) collected in Caldas Novas, Goiás, Brasil

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Motion computation and visual orientation in flies

open access: yes, 1993
Egelhaaf M, Borst A. Motion computation and visual orientation in flies. Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, A: Comparative Physiology. 1993;104(4):659-673.Visual orientation greatly relies on the evaluation of the motion patterns received by the ...

Inhibition of trypsin expression in Lutzomyia longipalpis using RNAi enhances the survival of Leishmania [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background Leishmania parasites must overcome several barriers to achieve transmission by their sand fly vectors. One of the earliest threats is exposure to enzymes during blood meal digestion.

Foodborne Disease Prevention and Broiler Chickens with Reduced Campylobacter Infection

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2013
Studies have suggested that flies play a linking role in the epidemiology of Campylobacter spp. in broiler chickens and that fly screens can reduce the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. We examined the year-round and long-term effects of fly screens in 10

Flies' lives on a crab [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2007
SummaryAlthough the ∼3000 species belonging to the Drosophilidae family are customarily referred to as fruit flies — as for example the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster — many have essentially little to do with fruit. Most drosophilids feed on microbes, and can hence be found on a wide variety of substrates, of which some are quite peculiar. Arguably

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Quantification of food intake in Drosophila [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Measurement of food intake in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is often necessary for studies of behaviour, nutrition and drug administration. There is no reliable and agreed method for measuring food intake of flies in undisturbed, steady state ...
