Morphing flight control surface for advanced flight performance

SPIE Proceedings, 2006
A novel Morphing Flight Control Surface (MFCS) system has been developed. The distinction of this research effort is that the SenAnTech team has incorporated our innovative Highly Deformable Mechanism (HDM) into our MFCS. The feasibility of this novel technology for deformable wing structures, such as airfoil shaping, warping or twisting with a ...

X-29A flight control system performance during flight test

Aircraft Design, Systems and Operations Meeting, 1987
An account is given of flight control system performance results for the X-29A forward-swept wing 'Advanced Technology Demonstrator' fighter aircraft, with attention to its software and hardware components' achievement of the requisite levels of system stability and desirable aircraft handling qualities.

Performance Enhancements by Bounding Flight

AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference, 2012
Bounding flight is a flight mode consisting of repeated cycles with alternating phases involving flapping and non-flapping. The bounding flight mode is treated as a periodic optimal control problem using an efficient optimization procedure to construct solutions. It is shown that bounding flight yields performance enhancements in the energy expenditure

Advanced Aircraft Flight Performance

2012
This book discusses aircraft flight performance, focusing on commercial aircraft but also considering examples of high-performance military aircraft. The framework is a multidisciplinary engineering analysis, fully supported by flight simulation, with software validation at several levels.

PERFORMANCE FLIGHT TEST TECHNIQUES

1964
Abstract : A handbook written primarily for test pilots is presented. The content of this handbook is not as technical as that required by the flight test engineer but does present the theoretical basis of each performance flight test on the level the average pilot can understand.

Personality and Flight Training Performance

Proceedings of the Human Factors Society Annual Meeting, 1989
Current naval aircrew selection research typically focuses on psychomotor and cognitive abilities, but evidence from flight training attrition studies suggests that many failures may be due to personality/motivational factors. This study concerns the relationships found between elements of primary flight training performance and the results of two ...

Flight performance of rotary seeds

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1989
Many samaras or winged seeds make autorotational flight during their fall. Twenty samples to each of ten species are tested in a vertical wind tunnel, and filmed by a still camera and a cinecamera with stroboscope flash and by smoked flow observation technique.

The flight performance of tsetse flies

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1975
Abstract The four species of tsetse used are shown to be aerodynamically rather similar. The wingbeat frequency, aerodynamic lift, flight duration, and number of wingbeats per flight are seen to undergo large increases during adult maturation. Tsetse can produce unusually large aerodynamic lifts, although the flight performance declines very quickly ...
