Abstract A numerical model is developed to investigate the behavior of a pair of flexible, floating breakwaters consisting of complaint, beam-like structures anchored to the sea bed. Each structure is kept under tension by a small buoyancy chamber at the tip, additional stiffness in each case is provided by mooring lines attached to the buoyancy ...

Assessment of floating breakwaters
Marine Behaviour and Physiology, 1992Structures for wave attenuation, i.e. floating breakwaters, exist mainly as theoretical concepts. Research into floating breakwaters has a long way to go before a practical floating breakwater is developed. However, the demand for development of such structures has always been strong in the field of offshore engineering.

Damping Effect of Floating Breakwater
Journal of the Waterways and Harbors Division, 1969The results of experimental studies are presented concerning the mechanism of attenuation of waves and the damping effect of the floating breakwater to which the system of phase difference is applied is shown. As the floating body rolls responding to the incident wave and simultaneously is forced by mooring ropes, so the phase difference between motion

Floating Breakwaters-A Wave Tank Study
Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1973There is a need in the offshore industry for a means of protecting certain operations and for reducing time lost because of weather. A floating breakwater may be the answer in many cases. A laboratory study is presented that establishes the most important parameters affecting a breakwater's performance. Introduction

Development of the Ihi Floating Breakwater
Coastal Engineering in Japan, 1979ABSTRACTWith the advent of the era of 200-mile economic sea zones, the efficient utilization of coastal waters has increasingly been required. Accordingly, many various facilities for cultivating marine products as well as port and harbor facilities, which used to be installed usually in shallow water of a bay, are obliged to be hereafter installed ...

Performance Analysis of Tethered Float Breakwater
Journal of the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division, 1979Describes laboratory experiments at one-half scale using simulated random seas and field tests at full scale of an installation of a dynamic floating breakwater system in a limited fetch situation. An analytical model is described which successfully predicted the performance of a tethered float breakwater configuration, given the incident wave spectrum.

Floating Tire Breakwater Design Comparison
Journal of the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division, 1982The design curves from two independent studies of the wave transmission and mooring force characteristics of Goodyear-type floating tire breakwaters are compared. The CERC wave transmission results from prototype scale tests and the mooring force results of Harms from model scale tests are recommended for use in design.

Energy Losses and Floating Breakwater Response
Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1988Very often the linear models of floating caisson breakwaters simulate the complete hydrodynamic phenomenon by dividing it into elementary problems, such as wave diffraction around a fixed surface body, motion of the moored structure caused by the wave, and change of the wave field due to waves generated by the breakwater.

Operational Experience with Floating Breakwaters
Marine Technology and SNAME News, 1977In the past few years floating breakwaters used for the protection of marina facilities have found increasing application. They provide a cost-effective solution at many potential sites and alleviate the environmental damage associated with more traditional breakwater construction.

Design Criteria for Floating Tire Breakwaters
Journal of the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division, 1979Wave-transmission and peak-mooring force design curves were generated for the Goodyear and Wave-Guard floating tire breakwaters from measurements on ⅛-scale and ¼-scale models using regular and irregular waves, and found to be in good agreement with available full-scale data. These curves may be used to determine the breakwater size needed to attenuate
