Floating marine litter and their risks to cetaceans off Portugal
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2021Floating Dangerous Debris For Cetaceans (DDFC) and cetacean abundances were assessed by shipboard visual surveys off continental Portugal. Plastic litter (other than fishing gear) was the most abundant category, corresponding to 56.53% of the total recorded DDFC.

Floating macro-litter pollution in the northern South China Sea
Environmental Pollution, 2023Marine litter pollution, particularly plastics pollution, is an increasing global concern. While various studies have contributed useful information on this topic, there has been a scarcity of data on floating marine macro-litter (FMML) in poorly monitored areas such as the South China Sea (SCS).

Microplastics and floating litter pollution in Bulgarian Black Sea coastal waters
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2020Although marine plastic litter has been recognized as a global problem, there are insufficient data on the extent of plastic pollution in the Black Sea. The results from this pilot study of the floating marine litter and microplastics along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast revealed high quantities of floating litter (60.3-93.8 items.km-2).

The influence of monsoons on the spatial distribution and composition of floating marine litter
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2022Floating marine litter (FML) surveys were conducted in the near shore waters of Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale Counties of Kenya through trawling using a manta net. A mean density of 26,665 ± 2869 items km-2 composed of 34.8% hard plastic, 40.5% soft plastics and 22.0% plastic lines/fibers was reported in this study.

Extended study on floating litter in Malta's coastal waters (Central Mediterranean)
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2021This study aims to determine the level of floating marine litter in coastal and inshore areas around Malta and Gozo (Central Mediterranean) and to investigate factors which influence litter distribution. Observations of macro-litter and mega-litter were conducted through seasonal boat surveys around Malta and Gozo during 2018-2019.

The role of the litter compartment in a constructed floating wetland
Ecological Engineering, 2012Abstract The short- and long-term decomposition of Carex acutiformis in constructed floating wetlands (CFWs) was assessed by means of a leaching experiment in the laboratory and an in situ litterbag experiment. Up to 23% of the initial dry matter (DM) was released within the first 6 days of the leaching experiments. In field conditions, however, this

Sponges on floating marine litter
This study aims to document the first occurrence of the sponge (Haliclona sp.) adhered to plastic in Brazil. This observation was made at Charitas Beach, located in Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), within its known distribution range in the Atlantic Ocean. However, anthropogenic activities might be expanding their distribution.Gabriel de Oliveira +4 more

Vision-Language Models for Floating Litter Detection
Deep learning-based computer vision methods are widely used to detect and quantify floating macroplastic litter in rivers, enabling accurate assessments of plastic pollution by automatically processing images and videos. However, these methods typically rely on large amounts of annotated data for supervised learning (SL), and the manual labeling work ...Chuyue Zhang +5 more

Advances and the future of remote sensing of floating litter
Earth Observation (EO) technologies can provide large scale systematic monitoring capabilities of all floating marine matter composed mostly of plastic based items. The main monitoring capabilities that have been demonstrated using EO include detection, identification, quantification and tracking of floating marine matter.Els Knaeps +2 more
