Decasticization, Dignity, and ‘Dirty Work’ at the Intersections of Caste, Memory, and Disaster

open access: yes, 2019
In this qualitative study we examine the role of caste, class, and Dalit janitorial labor in the aftermath of floods in Chennai, India, in 2015. Drawing from a variety of sources including interviews, social media, and news coverage, we studied how Dalit

Transient modeling of extraction columns: Parameter estimation, uncertainty analysis, and operation optimization

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite extensive modeling efforts in extraction research, transient column models are rarely applied in industry due to concerns regarding parameter identifiability and model reliability. To address this, we analyzed uncertainty propagation from estimated parameters in a previously introduced column model and assessed identifiability via ill ...

3D investigation and modeling of the geometric effects on porosity in packed beds

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract In porous beds, physical boundaries restrict particle arrangement, leading to inhomogeneous porosity. This paper reports on the porosity profiles that are the result of geometric effects on monodisperse packed beds in cylindrical and cubic arrangements. Special focus is given to the influence of edges and corners in cubic geometries.

Experimental validation of the RESPONSE framework against cyberattacks on cyber‐physical process systems

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This work experimentally validates the RESPONSE (Resilient Process cONtrol SystEm) framework as a solution for maintaining safe, continuous operation of cyber‐physical process systems under cyberattacks. RESPONSE implements a dual‐loop architecture that runs a networked online controller in parallel with a hard‐isolated offline controller ...

Flash floods versus river floods

open access: yes, 2019
River floods are among the most damaging natural hazards that frequently occur in Germany. Flooding causes high economic losses and impacts many residents. In 2016, several southern German municipalities were hit by flash floods after unexpectedly severe heavy rainfall, while in 2013 widespread river flooding had occurred.

Scale‐up of Streptomyces species cultivations based on the morphological response to the energy dissipation rate

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Filamentous microorganisms exhibit complex morphologies that influence product formation and are affected by various bioprocess parameters. Consistent morphology is therefore essential for comparable results during scale‐up. This study investigates the scale‐up of Streptomyces species (Streptomyces spp.) cultivations from shake flasks to ...

Predicting High‐Resolution Spatial and Spectral Features in Mass Spectrometry Imaging with Machine Learning and Multimodal Data Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
A multimodal fusion pipeline predicts high‐resolution ion distributions in imaging mass spectrometry by integrating Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance, time‐of‐flight matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization, and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry data.

What to Make and How to Make It: Combining Machine Learning and Statistical Learning to Design New Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Combining machine learning and probabilistic statistical learning is a powerful way to discover and design new materials. A variety of machine learning approaches can be used to identify promising candidates for target applications, and causal inference can help identify potential ways to make them a reality.

Identifying the impact of tidal level variation on river basin flooding [PDF]

open access: yes
Different parts of Sri Lanka are regularly subjected to a wide range of natural disasters, of which floods are most common. When severe, flooding can decrease the economic and social development of the country and the Government of Sri Lanka has to spend
