Nitrogen and Phosphorus Allocation Strategies in a Chronosequence of Tropical Dry Forests: Plant Coordination and Environmental Drivers

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 2, March 2025.
We explored the allocation strategies of N and P in leaves and fine roots (metabolic organs) and, in stems and coarse roots (woody organs) of nine dominant tree species in secondary tropical dry forests using scaling analysis. The scaling relationships of P versus N concentrations in non‐leaf organs were isometric across secondary succession and ...

Landscape composition and orchard management effects on bat assemblages and bat foraging activity in apple crops

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract Bats are acknowledged as suppliers of essential ecosystem services such as insect pest control in agroecosystems. Little is known, however, on how bat assemblages respond to the gradients imposed by anthropogenic landscapes and farming practices and how these environmental effects translate into changes in bat foraging.

Stable isotope analysis indicates partial mycoheterotrophy in arbuscular mycorrhizal woody seedlings in tropical forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 12, Page 2720-2733, December 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Chlorophyllous plants exhibiting partial mycoheterotrophy obtain carbon through mycorrhizal interactions in addition to photosynthesis. In arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) plants, the Paris‐morphotype (i.e.

El papel de la Red Andaluza de Jardines Botánicos (RED) en la investigación sobre biodiversidad en Andalucía

open access: yes, 2022
The regional government of Andalusia has developed several actions to catalog and conserve the biodiversity. Focusing on plants, a remarkable action is the setting of a network of botanic gardens linked to protected natural areas.

Seasonal acclimation of photosynthetic thermal tolerances in six woody tropical species along a thermal gradient

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 11, Page 2493-2505, November 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Extreme heat events are becoming increasingly common, and the short‐term acclimation of photosynthesis will have a large impact on plant performance. Trees in lowland tropical forests, which are hypothesized to have limited abilities to tolerate rising temperatures, may

Linking landscape structure, floral resource distribution, pollen use and movement distances of a generalist predator

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 11, Page 2798-2808, November 2024.
Our findings suggest that the spatial distribution of flowering wild plants can inform movement patterns of lacewings and other flower‐visiting insects in agricultural landscapes. In addition, the location of floral resources in the landscape is important for its capacity to sustain natural enemies. Given the strong reliance of lacewings on pollen from
